BackgroundThe aim of this study is to describe objectively measured physical activity (PA) and its correlates in one-year-old children.MethodsThe current study includes participants from the 2015 Pelotas (Brazil) birth cohort. At age one, PA was assessed in a 24-h protocol during 4 days with a wrist-attached accelerometer (ActiGraph, wGT3X-BT), from which two complete days of data were analyzed, with 5-s epochs.ResultsA total of 2974 individuals provided valid accelerometry data. Infants able to walk independently spent on average 19 h per day below 50 mg of acceleration (including sleep time), and those who could not walk spent on average 21 h in this intensity category. Girls spent approximately 10 min more than boys below 50 mg daily in both walking status categories, and less activity than boys on higher intensity categories. Boys and infants whose mothers were more physically active during pregnancy presented more acceleration, regardless of walking status. Among infants who could walk by themselves, those with mothers with one to eight schooling years; adequate length-for-age (z-score); not attending daycare; and more physically active fathers also showed higher levels of acceleration.ConclusionsOur findings demonstrate higher levels of PA among boys and those children with higher maternal PA during pregnancy, regardless of walking status. Also, among infants able to independently walk, 1–8 years of maternal schooling, adequate length-for-age (z-score), no daycare attendance and higher paternal PA are positive correlates of objectively measured PA early in life.
Background To assess the efficacy of PBMT on reducing postoperative pain scores in patients submitted to third molar extractions. Material and Methods A randomized controlled trial (ReBEC:RBR-94BCKZ) was designed according to the SPIRIT and followed the CONSORT. Patients were randomly allocated according to control or PBMT groups. PBMT consisted of the application of GaAlAs laser (808nm;50mW) applied in six points (1.23 min;11 J/cm2) after extraction. Pain scores were assessed using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) in millimeters evaluated after 6 (T6), 24 (T24), and 48 (T48) hours. The Wilcoxon Mann–Whitney test was used to check for possible associations between VAS scores and treatment groups. Results A total of 101 third molar extractions were performed in 44 patients. The mean age was 28 years old(SD±11.54). Comparing control and intervention, PBMT group showed a significant effect on the reduction of postoperative pain at T6(mean VAS=0.9; C.I:0.63–1.16) compared to control (mean VAS=2.5;C.I:2.1–2.88)( p <0.001). The same statistically significant effect on the reduction of postoperative pain was observed at T24 (PBMT mean VAS=0.72;C.I:0.51–0.93; control mean VAS=2.86;C.I:2.40–3.31; p <0.001) and T48 (PBMT mean VAS=0.64;C.I:0.36–0.92; control mean VAS=2.86;C.I:2.37–3.34; p <0.001). Conclusions PBMT significantly reduce the postoperative pain scores when assessed 6, 24, and 48 hours after third molar extractions. IntroduçãoHá muitos anos a atividade física (AF) é reconhecidamente um fator comportamental importante para a manutenção, tratamento e melhoria da condição de saúde da população [1][2][3] . Apesar disso, estudos epidemiológicos têm demonstrado que grande parcela da população não atinge as recomendações mínimas atuais de prática de AF para benefícios à saúde 1,2 , tornando a inatividade física um dos principais problemas enfrentados pela população mundial, com alta frequência entre os fatores de risco associado as doenças crônicas não-transmissíveis 3 . Estudo realizado por Hallal et al.1 descreveu o nível de atividade física em 122 países, identificando 31,1% de inatividade física em adultos. Quando analisados os dados de novo relatório disponibilizado sobre os níveis globais de inatividade física, evidenciou-se uma redução na prevalência da mesma para 23,8% 2 . Apesar disto, os resultados ainda são preocupantes, o que torna estudos de acompanhamentos essenciais para monitoramento destas alterações e seus fatores associados. ResumoO objetivo do estudo foi verificar a prática de atividades físicas e os fatores a ela associados em estudantes de Educação Física. Estudo longitudinal realizado com acadêmicos de uma Universidade Federal do sul do Brasil. Foram avaliados 81 estudantes dos cursos de licenciatura e bacharelado os quais responderam um questionário padronizado aplicado em dois períodos: início da graduação (2014) e início do segundo ano de curso (2015). O instrumento abordou questões sobre dados sociodemográficos, comportamentais e nutricional. O nível de atividade física foi avaliado nos domínios lazer e deslocamento através do International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) versão longa. A análise estatística utilizou teste de qui-quadrado para comparação de proporções e teste de McNemar para dados pareados. A amostra apresentou maior frequência de ativos entre os indivíduos do sexo masculino, solteiros e não fumantes. Não houve diferença significativa de ativos entre cursos e entre os períodos avaliados. O período de um ano após o ingresso na universidade não mostrou diferenças na prática de atividade física, no entanto as baixas prevalências no domínio do lazer alertam para uma continuidade no acompanhamento, visto que esses indivíduos, além de se beneficiarem deste comportamento saudável, serão futuros disseminadores do mesmo. OBJECTIVE To investigate the association between child care attendance since birth and development in two-years-old Brazilian children. METHODS The study used longitudinal data from the 2015 Pelotas Birth Cohort. The childhood development (cognitive, fine and gross motor skills, and language) at two-years-old children was assessed using INTER-NDA (INTERGROWTH-21st Neurodevelopment Assessment). The child care attendance was measured at ages one and two years and categorized as: a) never attended child care; b) attended some child care (one or two years); and c) always attended child care (one and two years). Demographic, socioeconomic, health, and child stimulation variables were considered as confounders. Crude and adjusted analyses of child care attendance and development were carried out using linear regression. RESULTS Out of the 3,870 infants included in the analyses, around 1/3 attended center-based child care. In crude analyses, attending center-based child care was associated with positive developmental outcomes, except in motor domains. In adjusted analyses, compared to those children that have never attended child care, children who did attend presented higher scores for cognitive development (always in child care: β: 2.44, 95%CI: 0.83–4.05; some child care: β: 1.35, 95%CI: 0.17–2.53). CONCLUSIONS This study suggests that center-based child care may help improve child cognitive development in the Brazilian context. Furthermore, the association was higher for early and continued attendance. Considering the low prevalence of children in external care, it is recommended to improve child care opportunities in early childhood.
RESUMO: Introdução: O comportamento sedentário tem sido associado a diversos indicadores de saúde. O objetivo deste estudo é descrever esse desfecho em idosos residentes de zona rural. Metodologia: Realizou-se um estudo transversal com idosos da zona rural de Rio Grande/RS, em 2017. A coleta de dados foi realizada por meio de questionário eletrônico. O comportamento sedentário foi avaliado pelo somatório de oito aspectos: assistir a televisão/vídeos/DVD, usar computador/internet, ler, socializar com amigos e/ou família, dirigir ou andar de carro/moto/transporte público, praticar algum hobby, trabalhar e outras atividades. A análise deu-se pela descrição dos aspectos e pela análise multivariável (regressão linear), para testar associações com características socioeconômicas, demográficas e atividade física. Também foi verificada associação do excesso de comportamento sedentário e tempo assistindo à televisão com as variáveis independentes. Resultados: A média de comportamento sedentário foi de 274,9 minutos/dia (n = 1.030), e assistir televisão representou quase a metade (130,5 minutos/dia). Idade mostrou-se inversamente associada com o comportamento sedentário, enquanto renda e escolaridade apresentaram uma relação direta. Renda apresentou associação positiva com excesso de comportamento sedentário e tempo assistindo televisão. Conclusão: A média de comportamento sedentário foi menor quando comparada com a literatura em idosos. Sugere-se que ações para incentivar hábitos saudáveis visem especialmente diminuir o tempo assistindo televisão.
Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of exercise during pregnancy on early childhood neurodevelopment (cognitive, motor, and language domains). Methods: A randomized controlled trial nested into the 2015 Pelotas (Brazil) Birth Cohort was conducted. Healthy pregnant women were enrolled between 16 and 20 weeks of gestation; 424 women and their children (intervention [n = 141]; control [n = 283]) were analyzed. An exercise-based intervention 3 times per week was delivered over 16 weeks. Child neurodevelopment and its domains were assessed at 1, 2, and 4 years. Standardized mean differences and 95% confidence intervals are presented. Results: No effects of exercise during pregnancy on child neurodevelopment and its domains at age 1 year were observed. Compared with the control group, children from women in the exercise group had higher language score at age 2 years (standardized mean differences = 0.23; 95% confidence intervals, 0.02 to 0.44) and higher cognitive score (standardized mean differences = 0.22; 95% confidence intervals, 0.03 to 0.41) at age 4 years. No effects of exercise during pregnancy were observed in the motor domain at 1, 2, and 4 years. Conclusions: No detrimental effects of exercise during pregnancy on child neurodevelopment were observed. In addition, these findings suggest that exercise during pregnancy can result in small benefits for language and cognitive development.
Background: The aim of this study was to investigate longitudinal associations between physical activity and early childhood neurodevelopment. Methods: Data from 1673 children from the 2015 Pelotas (Brazil) birth cohort study were analyzed. Physical activity was measured using accelerometers on the wrist at ages 1, 2, and 4 years. Neurodevelopment was measured using the Battelle Development Inventory at age 4 years. Linear regression models were used to test trajectories and cumulative associations of physical activity with child neurodevelopment. Results: Of the 3 physical activity trajectories observed, children in the medium (β = 1.17; 95% confidence interval, 0.25 to 2.10) and high (β = 2.22; 95% confidence interval, 0.61 to 3.82) trajectories showed higher neurodevelopment scores than children in the lower activity trajectory. Cumulative analyses showed that children in the highest tertile of physical activity in all follow-ups presented a mean neurodevelopment score 4.57 (95% confidence interval, 2.63 to 6.51) higher than children in the lowest tertile in all follow-ups. All analyses showed a dose–response characteristic of association, with higher physical activity indicating higher neurodevelopment scores. Conclusions: Physical activity may be an important predictor of neurodevelopment through early childhood.
Background: The association of physical activity through early childhood on children’s chronic stress still is unclear. Therefore, the aim of the present study is to test the association of physical activity through early childhood (1–4 y) with chronic stress, measured by hair cortisol at age 4. Methods: Longitudinal study including children from the 2015 Pelotas (Brazil) Birth Cohort. Cortisol at age 4 was measured using a hair sample, which provided cortisol concentration from the past months. Physical activity was measured using accelerometers at 1, 2, and 4 years. Linear regression models were used to assess the association between physical activity and chronic stress. Trajectory models were also applied to examine chronic stress in relation to physical activity patterns throughout early childhood. Results: Children with valid physical activity and hair cortisol data were included in the analyses (N = 1475). Three groups of physical activity trajectories between 1 and 4 years were identified: low, medium, and high. No association between physical activity at 1, 2, and 4 years and chronic stress at age 4 was observed. However, children in the “high” physical activity trajectory presented low cortisol concentration; the magnitude of the regression coefficient was slightly larger in girls (β = −0.125; 95% confidence interval, −0.326 to 0.074) than boys (β = −0.051; 95% confidence interval, −0.196 to 0.09). Conclusion: There was no clear association between physical activity and chronic stress in early childhood. Trajectories models suggest that higher activity throughout early childhood may positively impact chronic stress; however, more studies are needed to confirm that hypothesis.
