WATER USE EFFICIENCY BY SWEET CORN ON DIFFERENT IRRIGATION DEPTH AND TOP-DRESSING WITH NITROGEN ABSTRACTThe aimed was to evaluate the effect of different doses of nitrogen fertilization and irrigation depths in two cropping seasons on water use efficiency of sweet corn in Brazil. The experiment was conducted in of split plot scheme, having in the plots four irrigation depths (50, 75, 100 and 125% of crop evapotranspiration) and in the subplots, four nitrogen rates (0, 100, 200 and 300 kg ha -1 ) and in the sub-subplots, two cropping seasons (Winter/ Spring and Summer/Autumn), in the randomized blocks design with four replications. The Summer/Autumn season provides greater water use efficiency for sweet corn in northeastern
Irrigation and nitrogen fertilization are management practices that have positive results for the corn crop. This study aimed at evaluating the effect of nitrogen fertilization and irrigation on agronomic traits of sweet corn. Two experiments were carried out in two crop seasons (winter/spring and summer/autumn), in a split-plot design, with the main plots consisting of four irrigation levels (50 %, 75 %, 100 % and 125 % of the crop evapotranspiration - ETc) and subplots consisting of four nitrogen doses (0 kg ha-1, 100 kg ha-1, 200 kg ha-1and 300 kg ha-1), applied at the V3 and V8 stages, via urea, in a randomized blocks design experiment, with four replications. Leaf nitrogen content, root depth, plant height, stem diameter, ear yield and water use efficiency were evaluated. In the winter/spring season, nitrogen fertilization did not affect yield, while in the summer/autumn season the dose that maximized yield was 300 kg ha-1. Sweet corn showed better results when irrigated with replacements of 50 % and 125 % of ETc, respectively in the summer/autumn and winter/ spring seasons.
Proper irrigation management is crucial to obtain high yields of pea, since its cultivation is recommended in cold and dry seasons. Taking into account the great genetic diversity, we considered necessary to evaluate cultivars which best adapt to the intrinsic conditions of Cerrado Region, as it presents low fertility soil, long dry period in the winter, drought periods (veranicos) in rainy season, mainly in January and February (summer). Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate adaptability of green-pea cultivars under different irrigation depths in Northeast Region of state of Mato Grosso do Sul. The experiment was installed in a split plot scheme, with four irrigation depths [50, 75, 100 and 125% of crop evapotranspiration (ETc)] and at subplots, four pea cultivars (Forró, Frevo, Pagode and Samba) in a randomized block design with three replications. Pod length, number and mass of grains per pod, number of pods per plant, plant length, productivity and efficiency of water use were evaluated. Excess water supply (water stress) or shortage (water deficit) can cause decrease in the productivity of pea crop for green grains, considering replacement of 114.81% of Etc, the most recommended for the crop. Cultivar Forró, showed the best productive performance in relation to other cultivars, in the climatic conditions of Southern Cerrado (Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil).
A B S T R A C TReductions in soybean yields are mainly linked to the occurrence of dry spells, which are becoming more frequent due to climate change. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate soybean cultivars irrigated with different water depths under center pivot. The experiment was conducted during the 2014/15 growing season, under center-pivot irrigation in Chapadão do Sul, MS, Brazil. The design was a randomized block in split plot with four replicates, where plots consisted of 4 water depths (0, 50, 75 and 100% of crop evapotranspiration -ETc) and the subplots of 6 soybean cultivars (NA 5909 RR, DM 5958 IPRO, Anta 82 RR, M 7110 IPRO, Desafio RR, M 7739 IPRO). The cultivar Desafio RR was the one that best responded to irrigation, increasing yield to 6174 kg ha -1 against 3798 kg ha -1 under rainfed condition. The highest yield under rainfed condition was obtained by the cultivar NA 5909 RR, reaching 4806 kg ha -1 . The experiment was conducted in a split plot completely randomized design, with irrigation depths (50, 75, 100 and 125% of crop evapotranspiration) in the plots and barley cultivars (BRS Sampa, BRS Manduri and BRS 195) in the split-plots, with four replications. Barley cultivars were different regarding number of tillers per plant, number of spikelets per spike, and root depth. The maximum yields for BRS Sampa, BRS Manduri and BRS 195 were 5,848; 5,449; and 4,767 kg ha -1 , respectively. BRS Sampa showed a value 17% higher than the yield reported by the holder. The irrigation depth affected all the agronomic traits. It is recommended BRS Sampa for Brazilian Cerrado, that didn't differ from other cultivars and was developed in region of similar climate; with replacement of 100% of crop evapotranspiration.
A B S T R A C TThe objective of this work was to evaluate leaf gas exchanges of sweet corn as a function of defoliation when submitted to different irrigation depths. The experimental design was randomized blocks in split-plot scheme, with four irrigation depths in the plots [50, 75, 100 and 125% of crop evapotranspiration (ETc)], and three levels of defoliation in the subplots (0%, control; 35%, removal of four fully expanded leaves; 100%, total removal of the leaves -section of the aerial part) with three replicates. Defoliation was manually performed when the plant had four fully expanded leaves. It was verified that the dephs of irrigation and defoliation levels affect leaf gas exchanges in sweet corn plants, allowing the conclusion that the plant tends to activate a mechanism of photosynthetic compensation, when subjected to leaf stress, which can vary according to the degree of severity and water availability to which it is submitted. The most expressive values of gas exchanges in sweet corn plants that did not have defoliation were generally observed at irrigation depths estimated between 87 and 99% ETc and, in the treatments with defoliation, regardless of the level, at irrigation depth of 125% ETc.

ASCORBIC ACID, AN ALTERNATIVE TO MINIMIZE THE EFFECTS OF WATER DEFICIENCY IN RADISH 2 ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the physiological effects of radish cultivation under different water depths, simulating water deficiency (WD). The central hypothesis of the assay was to assess whether the exogenous foliar application of ascorbic acid could attenuate the physiological effects of this deficiency. The experimental design was a randomized complete block in subdivided plots. Two soil water potentials (10 and 30 kPa) were applied on plots, and the different concentrations of ascorbic acid (0, 250, 500, 750 and 1000 ppm) on the subplots, with four replications. It was verified that WD changes the patterns of photosynthetic parameters, and that the foliar application of ascorbic acid promoted a significant increase of these variables, especially when plants were submitted to stress. With regard to treatments with the vitamin, higher values of photosynthetic rate were obtained with the application of 675.8 and 837.3 ppm, in the tensions of 10 and 30 kPa respectively 30 days after emergency (DAE). Based on the results, it was concluded that the application of ascorbic acid has potential to mitigate the physiological effects of WD on radish plants.
