This study aimed to determine the effect of periodontal disease and dental decay, which deteriorated oral health in athletes, on the respiratory system and hence sports performance. The athletes were divided into 3 groups: group 1: no periodontal disease or dental health problem (age: 16.8 ± 4.72 years; 10 male and 15 female); group 2: DMFT 1.7 and 13 athletes with periodontal disease (age: 18.2 ± 4.88 years; 22 male and 22 female); and group 3: DMFT 6.7 and periodontal disease (age: 20.8 ± 4.60 years; 19 male and 23 female). The mean prevalence value, DMFT index, gingival index (GI), forced expiratory volume in 1 s/forced vital capacity (FEV1/FVC) ratio, and FVC mean value were evaluated. The mean FEV1/FVC% value of group 1 was 84.8 ± 2.26, and the mean body mass index (BMI) was 20.8 ± 4.56. The DMFT index of group 2 was found to be 1.7. Based on the GI assessment, 13 athletes were diagnosed with acute gingivitis. The mean BMI of this group was 22.2 ± 3.49. Based on the respiratory test, the mean value of FEV1/FVC% was 85±2.22. The DMFT index of group 3 was 6.7. No significant correlation was found between FEV1/FVC% and oral health problems of group 2. However, a significant correlation was observed between FEV1/FVC% and oral health status of group 3. FEV1/FVC% decreased with poor oral health, indicating that respiratory values were affected when oral health was bad, influencing the athlete's performance negatively.
This study aimed to investigate the effect of dental caries and the subsequent poor oral health on the blood parameters and anaerobic performance of athletes. The study was conducted on 30 elite rowing athletes (18 male and 12 female) who had a DMF-T index value of 3.9 after an oral check-up. The athletes were split into two groups: the study group, which consisted of athletes having four or more infected tooth; and the control group with athletes having one or no infected tooth. The study group consisted of 15 athletes (9 male and 6 female) with infected tooth number ≥4, DMF-T value of 7, and a mean age of 18.73 ± 1.05 years, whereas the control group consisted of also 15 athletes (9 male and 6 female) with DMF-T value of 0.9 and a mean age of 18.26 ± 2.01 years. The anaerobic capacity of athletes was measured using the Wingate test (WanT). The two demographically similar groups had no difference in their blood parameters and urine density values (P > 0.05). Also, no statistically significant difference in the WanT results was observed between the two groups, and WanT performances were similar in both groups (P > 0.05). Further, the superficial decay at the enamel and dentine levels did not negatively impact the anaerobic performance of athletes. On the contrary, it was suggested that studies should be conducted on the effect of severe dental caries at the pulpal level on athletic performance, which may also cause chronic inflammation.
as kuvveti, spor performansını etkileyen temel unsurlardan biridir. The nutrition knowledge and dietary practices of teen athletes is important for both their sports performance and overall health. Our approach to improving health communication with teen athletes takes advantage of the increasing prevalence of mobile phone and SMS messaging. This study consists of two parts: 1) conducting knowledge questions regarding nutrition and 2) developing text messages to support teen athletes. For the first part, 129 male high‐school elite wrestlers with a mean age of 16 (15‐17) years old and mean body weight of 66.6kg±15.9 (SD) were asked about their dietary practices along with general nutrition and sports nutrition knowledge. Athletes answered 59.7% of the general nutrition and 63.9% of the sports nutrition questions correctly. 58 % of the athletes believed that vitamins and minerals maintain their energy. 33.4% of the athletes answered incorrectly to the question asking which mineral promotes healthy bones and teeth. 31.8% of the athletes were skipping meals (36.6%, skipping breakfast; 46.3%, skipping lunch). 24.8% of the athletes were using ergogenic aids, and 35.0% and 15.0% were using vitamin mineral mixtures and protein powders respectively. For the second part of the study, over 100 messages were created by college students by obtaining information from popular consumer magazines or websites, health organization websites, and literature review. These messages were refined by researchers for delivery through SMS. Through a participatory process, educational text messages will be tested based on how teen athletes respond to these text messages, and their suggestions for developing additional topics of interest will be considered.
