Buckwheat is a plant used for many purposes, such as consumed as a food and used in the
treatment of diseases. It is a good source of many vitamins and minerals and has balanced nutritional
value. Because of its nutrient content and many positive effects on human health, buckwheat has become
a functional food, recently. Main effects of buckwheat on human health are its hypotensive,
hypoglycemic, hypocholesterolemic, neuroprotective and antioxidant effects. Thus, it is considered
an alternative food component in dietary treatment for chronic and metabolic diseases, such as diabetes,
hypertension and celiac disease. Also, its rich nutrient content supports daily diet and provides a
better eating profile. As a result, buckwheat is accepted as a functional food, suggested to improve
human health and is used in the treatment of diseases. The aim of this review is to explain some positive
effects of buckwheat on human health.
One important aethiological factor in the pathogenesis of chronic atrophic candidosis is the presence of Candida albicans on the fitting surface of the dentures. Fibers may come into contact with oral mucosa during the finishing procedures of acrylic resins. The exposed fibers may provide mechanical retention for yeast cells at the interface of the components. The effect of two different glass fibers and two different environments were evaluated in respect of Candida albicans adhesion to the acrylic surface. Half of the acrylic samples reinforced with two different fibers (Sticknet and Eversticknet) were pretreated with phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) and the rest with unstimulated saliva. The test specimens were placed in yeast suspension. The adhered cells were examined with a scanning electron microscope. The amount of adhered cells in PBS was lower for Eversticknet but the difference was not significant (p > 0.05). The number of yeast cells decreased in saliva for both groups and the difference was statistically significant for the samples reinforced with Eversticknet (p < 0.01). The use of Sticknet or Eversticknet as reinforcing material for poly(methylmethacrylate) had no effect on surface topography due to the same adhesion state of Candida albicans. The presence of a salivary pellicle derived from unstimulated saliva reduced adhesion of Candida albicans.
Arm span was found to be strongly correlated with height. Although mid-upper arm and waist circumferences were moderately correlated, waist circumference was not detected as a predictor for height in girls and boys.
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVESStudies have indicated that university students majoring in nutrition and dietetics or sport sciences may have more obsessions associated with eating attitudes and body shape perception compared to other disciplines i.e. social sciences. Therefore, this study aimed to assess and compare the risk of eating disorders and body shape perception.MATERIALS/METHODSData was collected from 773 undergraduate students at the Departments of Nutrition and Dietetics (NDD) (n = 254), Physical Education and Sports (PESD) (n = 263), and Social Sciences (SOC) (n = 256).A socio-demographic and personal information questionnaire, Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-40), Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ-34), Perceived Figure Rating Scale (FRS) were applied; and body weights and heights were measured.RESULTSMean EAT-40 scores showed that, both male and female students of PESD had the highest scores (17.4 ± 11.6) compared with NDD (14.3 ± 8.3) and SOC (13.0 ± 6.2) (P < 0.05). According to EAT-40 classification, high risk in abnormal eating behavior was more in PESD (10.7%) compared to NDD (2.9%) and SOC (0.4%) students (P < 0.05). Students of PESD, who skipped meal, had higher tendency to the risk of eating disorders (P < 0.05). In parallel, body shape perception was found to be marked with higher scores in NDD (72.0 ± 28.7) and PESD (71.5 ± 32.8) compared with SOC (64.2 ± 27.5) students (P < 0.05). Considering BSQ-34 classification, high concern (moderate and marked) for body shape were more in PESD (7.4 %) compared to NDD (5.2%) and SOC (1.9%) students (P < 0.05). The body size judgement via obtained by the FRS scale were generally correlated with BMI. The Body Mass Index levels were in normal range (Mean BMI: 21.9 ± 2.8 kg/m2) and generally consistent with FRS data.CONCLUSIONSTendency to the abnormal eating behavior and substantial body shape perception were higher in PESD students who have more concern on body shape and were not well-educated about nutrition. In conclusion, substantial concern on physical appearance might affect eating behavior disorders in PESD students.
Purpose -This study was aimed at assessing the anthropometry and the nutritional status of a sample of the elderly in Turkey. It was designed as a cross-sectional study using the mini nutritional assessment (MNA) scores to assess the nutritional status of the elderly living alone, with their family, and in nursing homes. Design/methodology/approach -The work was planned and carried out so as to assess nutritional status and MNA of 429 elderly people, aged 65 years and over living with their family (n 5 246), in nursing homes (n 5 127) or alone (n 5 56). Body weight, height, mid upper arm and calf circumference of elderly people was measured and they were asked personal questions. The list of questions included if the person pursues an independent life, the number of meals and food groups they consumed, the answers of which were scored and then assessed. With regard to MNA scale, a score of ,17 is regarded as an indication of malnutrition, 17-23.5 indicates a sign for malnutrition risk and 24 and higher signifies normal level. The data were analysed with SPSS 10.0 for Windows. Means, standard deviations and cross tabulation tables were used as descriptive statistics. Pearson's correlation coefficients were determined in correlation analysis. Findings -A statistical analysis of the scores shows that 5.4 per cent of the elderly people living alone, 2.4 per cent of those living in nursing homes and 0.4 per cent living with families could be regarded as malnourished. It was also found that elderly people living in nursing homes have more risk for malnutrition. MNA scores, based on measurements such as body weight, BMI (body mass index) and mid upper arm indicated a significant correlation with the malnutrition. Practical implications -MNA appears to be a practical and reliable method to assess the nutritional status of elderly people and more importance should be attached to those living alone or in nursing homes to prevent their nutritional problems. Originality/value -Assesses the nutritional status of the elderly living alone, with their family or in nursing homes in Turkey.
