Wenn wir auch annehmen, class bei vorurtheilsfreiem Studium der Origimdarbeit das Unzutreffende der kritischen Bemerkungen Frank's zu erkennen sein dfirfte, so glauben wit doeh, im Interesse tier Saehe auf eine Erwiderung nicht verziehten zu sollen. Um einen principiellen Streitpunkt vorweg zu nehmen, so h~lt es Frank ffir unzuliissig, aus den Untersuchungen, welche er im Jahre 1886, und wit im 3ahre 1896 fiber den Keimgehalt des Spreewassers angestellt haben, Mittelzahlen zu berechnen. Wir haben das in unserer Arbeit gethan. Frank ist tier Ansieht, ,,dass Mittelwerthe nur dann richtig sind, wenn sie aus einer wirkheh grossen Reihe yon mSghehst gleichm~ssigen Einzelzahlen gewonnen werden. Denn nur eine grosse Zahlenreihe vetmag die Fehler der einzelnen Zahlen auszumerzen". Unter einer grossen Zahlenreihe, aus der ann~ihernd richtige Mittelwerthe herausgereehnet werden kSnnen, versteht Frank abet nur eine
