Para Devereux, "o valor igual de homens e mulheres está no fato de que, em uma espécie sexuada, o homem pressupõe a mulher como a mulher pressupõe o homem. Sua diversidade garante o sentido de cada um dos dois e prova a igualdade de seu valor". O feminino e a Psicanálise são o foco deste livro. A autora, psicanalista, aborda, como diz o próprio título de seu trabalho, os deslocamentos que a mulher, na modernidade, faz ao longo da vida para deixar de ser, tão somente objeto de desejo do outro para ser, também, sujeito desejante e sujeito de um discurso que lhe é próprio, tornando-se o ser de linguagem e cultura de que fala a Psicanálise. A proposta da autora é, pois, em suas palavras, "examinar e contribuir para ampliar o campo a partir do qual as mulheres se constituem como sujeitos."
