Entre los años 2015 y 2017, la temperatura superficial del mar en bahía Independencia (14°15’S), se caracterizó por anomalías térmicas positivas, que alcanzó el máximo de +3,0 °C en enero 2016, condición que favoreció el crecimiento poblacional de la concha de abanico. La presencia de semillas de esta especie generó expectativas para su extracción, a pesar de ser una actividad ilegal, que se desarrolló con fines de confinamiento dentro yfuera de la bahía Independencia. En marzo 2016, en Laguna Grande se descargó 3,32 t de ejemplares de 22,4 mm de altura promedio, incrementándose los desembarques hasta alcanzar 20,77 t en junio 2016, totalizando ese año 59,665 t. En el 2017, se observó baja disponibilidad de semilla, el desembarque en setiembre fue 0,13 t. En base a los desembarques y pesos individuales, se calculó la extracción de 19,691 millones de ejemplares de semilla, que generó un valor de comercialización de 1,026 millones de soles. Las tallas proyectadas a 12 meses (K = 0,5 año-1, L∞ = 118 mm y t0 = 0) corresponderían a un valor de 9,846 millones de soles. El cálculo económico nos permitió determinar una pérdida económica mayor a los 8 millones de soles, además de la pérdida poblacional del recurso, considerando que las condiciones cálidas incrementan la frecuencia reproductiva (desoves sucesivos), aportando nuevos cohortes a la población. La extracción ilegal de semilla de concha de abanico afectó la producción somática en los bancos naturales de bahía Independencia durante El Niño Costero 2017, afectando al ciclo natural de la especie.
