Benthic subtidal polychaetes on soft bottoms in Aysén, Chile: Clades Amphinomida, Eunicida, Spionida, Sabellida and Scolecida (Annelida, Polychaeta)* ABSTRACT. We present results from a taxonomic study of subtidal benthic polychaetes belonging to the Amphinomida, Eunicida, Spionida, Sabellida and Scolecida clades, obtained during the Cimar-7 and Cimar-8 Fjords research cruises. We include morphological observations and illustrations, synonymy and the geographical distribution for each species. Samples were obtained in the Aysén region (43º45'S-46º28'S), on the southeastern Pacific coast of Chile, from silt-clay bottoms using an Agassiz trawl between 20 and 444 m depth. During the two cruises we collected 79 specimens from the Eunicida clade (corresponding to six species, grouped into six genera and five families); two specimens of the species Pareurythoe chilensis (Kinberg) and Chaetopterus cf. variopedatus (Renier) from the Amphinomida and Spionida clades, respectively; 13 specimens from the Sabellida clade (four species, grouped into four genera and three families); and 187 specimens from the Scolecida clade (three species grouped into two genera and one family). We collected a total of three species of Maldanidae (20...
Venezuela possesses a great variety of coastal environments allowing for a high diversity of marine species. However, systematic studies on marine invertebrates are scarce, especially on polychaetes. The family Syllidae is poorly known, and only 14 genera and 42 species have been reported from this country. A total of 13 genera and 26 species the Syllidae were identified from benthic samples collected on different substrata of the northeastern coast of Venezuela. Of these, seven genera and 16 species constitute new records for Venezuela: Odontosyllis guillermoi, Syllides floridanus, Salvatoria clavata, Salvatoria limbata, Sphaerosyllis longicauda, Parapionosyllis longicirrata, Trypanosyllis parvidentata, Trypanosyllis vittigera, Opisthosyllis sp., Syllis amica, Syllis armillaris, Syllis gracilis, Syllis pseudoarmillaris, Syllis vittata, Parasphaerosyllis indica and Myrianida convoluta.
Sternaspis chilensis n. sp. is described based on specimens collected in channels and fjords of southern Chile and previously identified as Sternaspis scutata (Ranzani, 1817), originally described from the Meditarrean Sea. Sternaspis chilensis n. sp. is described based on the features of the shield with anterior margins rounded and anterior depression shallow; marginal shield chaetal fascicles arranged with an inverted C-shaped pattern; and distribution of the integument papillae. Sternaspis chilensis is widely distributed in the Magellan Province from Estero Reloncaví (41°32'54"S, 72°19'48"W) to Strait of Magellan (53°34'S, 70°04'W), between 50 and 515 m depth.
Five species of Prionospio Malmgren, 1867, each with four pairs of branchiae, are studied from coast of the Iberian Peninsula. Two of these species, Prionospiocristaventralissp. n. and P.paraparisp. n., are new to science, whereas P.caspersi Laubier, 1962, P.fallax Söderström, 1920, and P.ehlersi Fauvel, 1928 have been previously recorded. Prionospiocristaventralissp. n. is characterized by having ventral crests present on chaetigers XI–XIX, dorsal crests and low crests on chaetigers X–XXXIV, triangular neuropodial postchaetal lamellae with pointed ventral edges on chaetiger II, oval neuropodial lamellae on chaetiger III, digitiform pinnules on the posterior face of the first and fourth pairs, and branchial pairs II and III are triangular. Prionospioparaparisp. n. is characterized by having rounded neuropodial postchaetal lamellae on chaetiger I, digitiform pinnules on the posterior face of the first and fourth pairs, branchial pairs II and III are cirriform, low dorsal crests on chaetigers VIII–IX, and oval neuropodial lamellae with enlarged dorsal edges on chaetiger III. A key is given to all Prionospio species with four pairs of branchiae known from the Iberian Peninsula coastline.
