Syllidae (Annelida, Polychaeta) from the Caribbean coast of Venezuela

Abstract: Venezuela possesses a great variety of coastal environments allowing for a high diversity of marine species. However, systematic studies on marine invertebrates are scarce, especially on polychaetes. The family Syllidae is poorly known, and only 14 genera and 42 species have been reported from this country. A total of 13 genera and 26 species the Syllidae were identified from benthic samples collected on different substrata of the northeastern coast of Venezuela. Of these, seven genera and 16 species constitut… Show more

“…The complexity of the internal channeling system of the S. polyschides holdfast may offer larger and more protective areas for this fauna (McKenzie and Moore 1981) than the sediment interstitial spaces. Several studies also suggest that hard substrates are more important for Syllids than soft substrates (e.g., Antoniadou et al 2004;Liñero-Arana and Díaz 2011;Serrano et al 2006). Faulwetter et al (2011) recorded only 23 species in soft-bottom samples (in Israel) when compared to the 62 species found in several hard substrates (e.g., filamentous Phaeophyceae and Chlorophyceae, Jania sp., Cystoseira sp.…”

“…Currently the northernmost known occurrence of the species in Brazil is in the state of Piauí (Santos et al ., ). Beyond the Amazon and Orinoco Rivers, the species has also been recorded in Venezuela (Liñero‐Arana, ). Discontinuities in the range cannot at present be stated with certainty, as field observations in this geographical region are far from exhaustive, and areas with confirmed absences have yet to be described.…”
