Nonlinear analysis method is one of the earliest methods proposed for form-finding analysis of tensioned fabric structures. However due to some inherent weaknesses, the method has not been fully developed. In this paper, computational strategies for form-finding analysis of tensioned fabric structure using the nonlinear analysis method has been proposed. For the purpose of verification, form-finding analysis on numerical examples of tensioned fabric structures in the form of minimal surfaces Catenoid, Helicoid, Scherk and Enneper have been carried out. Both the obtained shape and pre-stress pattern have been checked with classical solutions for the above minimal surfaces for verification of the effectiveness of the proposed computational strategies.
Arch bridges which have existed since thousands years ago showed surprising durability. Due to the aesthetic value of arch bridges, it is widely used as crossing over valleys and rivers nowadays. Closed spandrel arch bridge is one type of arch bridges that has been developed using precast concrete technology since 1965. Currently, the available Precast Concrete Arch Bridge Systems are BEBO arch, Matiere arch, CON/SPAN arch, TechSpan arch, NUCON arch, Concrete-Filled FRP Tube arch, Flexi-Arch, Rivo CS-P Series arch and Pearl Chain arch. In this paper, development of the Precast Concrete Closed Spandrel Arch Bridge System is reviewed. The advantanges of precast closed spandrel arch bridge system will also be briefly presented. Comparisons in terms of arch sections, moulding, handling, transporting and installing among different Precast Concrete Closed Spandrel Arch Bridge Systems are also highlighted.
Precast concrete sheetpile designed to restore and protect a road embankment, undergoing continuous settlement in soft ground condition in Jerlun and Kuala Sanglang in the state of Kedah, Malaysia is presented. The road built on soft ground has been in service for several years with some anticipated settlements. Major defects in the form of uneven settlements were spotted after few years of service. A survey was conducted and 5 spots along a 30m to 40m long stretch experiencing about 100mm settlements relative to the centerline of the road. Several attempts have been made to backfill and re-surface the affected areas but the road conditions did not last, posing danger to motorists. Investigations have revealed slip circles did occur at the affected areas with signs of lateral movements of earths towards the river. Precast concrete sheetpiles were designed to stabilize the road embankment to prevent further lateral movements of earth due to vehicular loads on the road. Analysis and design of the sheetpile system are presented. Construction aspects related to handling, installing and finishing works at site are highlighted.
This paper presents the experimental results of post-heated concrete cylinders repaired externally using Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) fabrics. Eighteen concrete cylinders of size 155mm x 300mm were exposed to different temperatures of 100, 200, and 300°C for 3 hours. Subsequently, the exposed concrete cylinders were naturally cooled down to room temperature and repaired externally using CFRP reinforcement. All these cylinders were tested to failure under axial loading. Results show that the residual strength of post-heated CFRP repaired concrete cylinders was significantly increased between 47 to 51% over the control cylinders. However, the ductility of CFRP repaired concrete cylinders was increased at the elevated temperatures.
Tensioned membrane structures are pre-stressed membrane structures that are appropriate to be used for long span application. Tensioned membrane structures must depend on their shape and internal pre-stress alone to achieve stability and to carry the loads. Some of the largest stadiums, airports, convention halls and commercial places are tensioned membrane structures. It is essential to perform shape-finding analysis while dealing with tensioned membrane structures. In this study, shape-finding analysis is carried out using computer program for stress analysis which is based on theory of nonlinear displacement method. Shape-finding of membrane surface bordered by Egg has been investigated. In this study, the possibility of adopting the form of Egg as surface shape for tensioned membrane structure has been studied.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
