Antecedentes: El dolor posoperatorio en la colecistectomía abierta es de tipo severo lo presentan 50% de los pacientes intervenidos. Objetivos: Demostrar que el uso del Sulfato de Magnesio (MgSO4) por vía intravenosa es una mejor alternativa como analgésico que el tratamiento convencional (ketorolaco) en pacientes postoperados de colecistectomía Métodos: Se realizó un estudio longitudinal, prospectivo, experimental y analítico comparándose el Sulfato de Magnesio contra el ketorolaco midiendo dosis de rescate, grado de dolor con Escala de EVA y complicaciones con el uso de Sulfato de Magnesio en el posoperatorio. Resultados: Se incluyeron dentro del estudio 40 pacientes divididos en 2 grupos, en el grupo del Sulfato de Magnesio solo 9 pacientes que corresponde al 45% utilizaron medicamento de rescate en 146.7 ± 67.8 minutos (rango: 60-240 min) comparado con el grupo Control, 14 (70%) pacientes requirieron fármacos de rescate a un tiempo promedio de 154.3 ± 36.9 minutos (rango: 90-180 min). Conclusiones: Se comprobó la utilidad del Sulfato de Magnesio para control del dolor postoperatorio severo, se observó que al momento de la extubación y los 30 minutos subsecuentes la EVA fue menor en el grupo de estudio, lo cual nos indica mejor analgesia con el sulfato de Magnesio. En este estudio no se observaron efectos colaterales o complicaciones con ninguno de los dos tratamientos.
