Le travail journalistique est structurellement confronté à l’urgence. Contrairement à d’autres secteurs reposant sur un flux tendu, l’urgence n’y relève pas seulement des défaillances aléatoires du cycle de production : elle tient également à la nature même de la matière première, l’actualité, qui doit être traitée dans le contexte d’une organisation collective. À partir d’observations et d’entretiens réalisés au sein de la presse écrite, cet article étudie la manière dont l’urgence s’inscrit au quotidien dans la production journalistique. Il met en évidence, dans ce flux de produits uniques, les efforts de sérialisation et la mince possibilité de négociation de l’irréversibilité – inhérente aux procès industriels. La solution aux problèmes posés par l’urgence passe principalement par une gestion des stocks, qui souligne le rôle central et les ressorts de la prévision dans des situations où le contenu même du travail est marqué par l’incertitude.
La littérature managériale se saisit parfois d'un idéal-type du travail intermittent pour décrire ce qu'elle envisage comme des évolutions à venir des modes d'organisation du travail et de mobilisation de la main d'oeuvre. Ces mutations se traduiraient notamment par un raccourcissement des relations d'emploi toujours plus éphémères et plus nombreuses. Cet article s'appuie sur l'exploitation de données statistiques concernant les comédiens intermittents. Il se propose de montrer que la conception du travail artistique sous-jacente à ce discours ne saurait rendre compte de la pluralité effective des relations de tra-vail qu'entretiennent les artistes intermittents avec leurs employeurs. On peut en effet distinguer deux régimes de relations d'emploi sur le marché du travail des comédiens. Tandis que le premier demeure proche de l'idéal-type d'un travailleur intermittent nouant des relations ponctuelles avec ses employeurs, le second repose sur la constitution par l'individu d'un « noyau dur » d'employeurs. Ce « noyau » s'avère de surcroît particulièrement important tant pour l'activité du comédien, dont il représente une part prépondérante, que pour sa carrière, à la stabilité de laquelle il contribue de façon décisive.
