The science and technology sector plays an important role in the growth and diversification of the Nigerian economy. This article examines the information-seeking behaviour of science and technology researchers in Nigeria in order for the right approach to be taken with respect to information provision. A survey methodology was used for the study and 114 multidisciplinary science and technology researchers at the Federal Institute of Industrial Research Oshodi served as the respondents. The findings of the study revealed that science and technology researchers frequently sourced information from journals and knowledgeable persons; the Internet was the most frequent information source. The science and technology researchers used information for carrying out research and solving personal needs, among other things. The challenges identified in using information sources included outdated books and lack of adoption of electronic services. The study recommended that efforts should be directed at improving researchers’ access to information and the establishment of an institutional electronic database should be encouraged.
The study assessed the information literacy (IL), attitude towards research and research competence of Library and Information Science (LIS) undergraduates in South-West Nigeria universities. The descriptive survey design was adopted for the study. A two-stage sampling technique was employed for the study to get a final sample of 401. Questionnaire and focus group discussion (FGD) were the instruments for the study. Out of 401 copies of the questionnaire, 392 were found usable, which constituted a 97% return rate. The data gathered were analysed with the aid of the SPSS by the use of frequency, percentage and correlation. Thematic analysis was conducted on the qualitative data (FGD). The study found that the LIS undergraduates had poor IL, a mixed display of attitude towards research, and an acceptable level of research competence. Further, there was a significant relationship between IL and research competence of LIS undergraduates. The study recommends training on the acquisition of IL skills at the earlier levels of the LIS degree to help with research motivation and comprehension.
The study that directed this article aimed to assess the opinions of industrial researchers and librarians regarding library and information services provided by the research library of the Federal Institute of Industrial Research Oshodi (FIIRO), Nigeria. The library of the modern era is expected to develop naturally, growing bigger to accommodate different kinds of information resources and services for better information provision to its users. This study set out to determine if library and information services at FIIRO were indeed answering this call. A mixed-methods design was adopted with the use of questionnaires, face-to-face interviews and observation for data collection. It was found that both groups, the industrial researchers and the librarians, were not satisfied with the library and information services offered by the institute’s library. Poor funding, lack of political will by the management and government authorities, and the lack of internet connectivity were highlighted as some of the main problems facing library fitness. In order to improve these services of information provision, the study recommends several innovations, mainly that librarians should be involved in management decisions, especially in the formulation of library policies and strategies.
The study investigated the information resources utilization of biotechnologists and food technologists of the Federal Institute of Industrial Research Oshodi (FIIRO) in Nigeria. The descriptive survey design was adopted in carrying out the study. The population consisted of all the biotechnologists (37) and food technologists (45) of the institute. These researchers were selected using non-probability sampling method of total population sampling - a type of purposive sampling technique. A questionnaire was used as the instrument for data collection. The data collected were analyzed using frequency count and percentage. The key findi ngs of the study among others were that: the majority of the biotechnologists and food technologists sought information in carrying out research, solving personal needs, and for general awareness; and they utilized a wide variety of information sources. The study concluded that diverse and balanced delivery of multiple information sources must be meticulously offered to these researchers. The study recommended specialized collections offering of more appropriate information services to meet the biotechnologists’ and food technologists’ needs for information.
