Multivariate techniques for the determination of genetic diversity in sesame using RAPD markersAbstract -The objective of this work was to compare different multivariate techniques in the characterization of 35 sesame genotypes using 769 RAPD makers. Genetic distances were obtained from the arithmetic complement of the Jaccard coefficient, and were evaluated by single linkage, complete linkage and unweighted arithmetic average (UPGMA) agglomerative methods, Tocher optimization method and principal coordinate analysis. The clustering structure was altered by the different methods. Adopting the same genetic distance (0.36) as value of cut, four groups were discriminated in single linkage, 13 in complete linkage and 11 in UPGMA; the Tocher's optimization methods formed four groups. Among the hierarchical clustering methods, UPGMA showed the best adjust for estimated and originals distances (CCC = 0.89). Principal coordinates analyses confirmed the low diversity among genotypes. The highest divergence occurred between Seridó 1 and Arawaca 4 cultivars, and the minor, between VCR-101 and GP-3314 genotypes. The three first principal coordinates responded for 35.13% of the variability, and 18 autovalues were necessary to explain 81% of the genetic variation. UPGMA, Tochers' optimization and the principal coordinates analyses are complementary in the clusters formation.
ABSTRACTCaatinga, the predominant vegetation type of the semiarid region of northeastern Brazil, is composed by plants showing efficient mechanisms to keep them in the ecosystem. The herbaceous, bush and tree strata provide food for animals and several products for human use, and supply seedbank with propagules to assure plant recovery. The objective of this study was to compare seedbank density, composition and diversity of three sites with different vegetation physiognomies: craibeira plantation site (A1), degraded site (A2) and juremas + sabia plantation site (A3), located at the Nupeárido Experimental Station/Federal University of Campina Grande (UFCG), Patos, PB state, Brazil. Five litterfal + soil samples were collected in each site and taken to the Forest Nursery of UFCG Campus in Patos and kept under a 50% solar radiation reduction plastic
-This study evaluated body fat, protein and energy contents and nutritional requirements for body weight (BW) gain of lambs in tropical semiarid conditions. Thirty-two castrated Santa Inês 3-to-4-month old lambs (initial BW: 15.8 kg ± 1.4 kg) were used. Eight lambs were initially slaughtered to serve as the reference for initial body weight composition. The remaining 24 animals were placed in a randomized block with three treatments and eight replications. Each one of the eight experimental blocks consisted initially of three 15 kg lambs to which treatments (daily supplement levels: 0.0, 1.0, and 1.5% of body weight of a corn, soybean and minerals concentrate mixture adjusted for a daily 200 g BW gain at 1.5% level) were Palavras-chave: caatinga, ovinos, pasto nativo
This study evaluated the performance and carcass characteristics of lambs fed diets with increasing levels of Mimosa tenuiflora (Willd.) hay replacing Buffel grass (Cenchrus ciliaris). Twenty-eight Santa Inês male lambs with an average body weight (BW) of 20.3 ± 1.49 kg(mean ± SD) were allocated in individual stalls and distributed in a completely random design with four treatments (0, 20, 40, and 60 g/100 g total DM M. tenuiflora hay replacing Buffel grass hay in diet) with seven replications. M. tenuiflora hay at the level of 20% dry matter (DM) total replacing Buffel grass hay increased final weight (P = 0.006), total weight gain (P < 0.001), average daily weight gain (ADWG; P < 0.001), DM intake (P < 0.001), and feed efficiency (P < 0.001). Intake of crude protein, NDF, ADF, ash, ether extract, total and non-fibrous carbohydrates, and total digestible nutrients presented a positive quadratic effect with M. tenuiflora hay replacing Buffel grass hay and 40 g/100 g total DM level presented greater intake. There were positive quadratic effects by M. tenuiflora hay inclusion at 20 g/100 g total DM level on slaughtering weight (P = 0.005), hot carcass weight (P = 0.002), cold carcass weight (P = 0.002), empty body weight (P = 0.001), hot carcass yield (P = 0.002), cold carcass yield (P = 0.003), and increase linear on biological yield (P = 0.003). There was no influence on cooling weight loss (P = 0.284). M. tenuiflora hay may be included in lamb diets at amounts up to 20 g/100 g total DM substitution of Buffel grass hay because increase in the nutrients intake, growth performance, and carcass characteristics.
-The objective of this work was to compare forage production and quality of thorny and thornless "jurema-preta" (Mimosa tenuiflora (Willd.) Poiret) in a dense planted stand, subjected to annual pruning of fine branches, in Patos, PB, Brazil. The experiment consisted of two treatments (thornless and thorny "jurema-preta") in a complete randomized block design, with ten replicates of two linear plots subdivided in time. Forage mass and chemical composition of fine branches and the basal diameter of plants were measured during five years. Pruning decreased (p<0.05) increments in basal diameter and forage production. Annual dry matter yields reached 4,108 and 5,833 kg ha -1 , respectively, for thornless and thorny plants, and forage quality was similar (p>0.05) for both genotypes. This roughage fodder (minimum NDF and ADF averages were 56±1.1% and 43±1.0%, respectively) had low P and K concentrations. Its average crude protein content was greater than 9.9±0.5%, which exceeds the minimum necessary for animal maintenance. Both "jurema-preta" genotypes tolerated pruning of fine branches and contributed with a significant amount of roughage fodder for animal maintenance in the dry season.Index terms: Mimosa tenuiflora, semiarid zones, legume tree.
