RESUMO -Avaliou-se o efeito de diferentes níveis de energia metabolizável na dieta sobre a composição corporal e as exigências de proteína líquida de 24 ovinos Santa Inês em crescimento, não-castrados, com idade e peso corporal médio de 50 dias e 13,00 ± 0,56 kg. Após um período de adaptação de 10 dias, quatro animais foram abatidos para serem utilizados como referência para as estimativas do peso do corpo vazio (PCVZ) e da composição corporal inicial dos demais. Os animais remanescentes foram distribuídos em um delineamento em blocos casualizados com rações contendo diferentes níveis de energia metabolizável (2,08; 2,28; 2,47 e 2,69 Mcal/kg MS) e proteína bruta (12,74; 14,36; 15,97 e 17,65% PB na MS) com cinco repetições. A excreção diária de N foi estimada extrapolando-se a equação de regressão de consumo de N (g/kg PC 0,75 /dia) em função da retenção de N (g/kg PC 0,75 /dia) para o consumo zero. A derivada da equação de regressão do logaritmo do conteúdo de proteína em função do logaritmo do PCVZ dos animais permitiu a estimativa da exigência proteica líquida para ganho de peso de corpo vazio (GPCVZ). A excreção diária de N foi estimada em 277 ± 0.05 mg/kg PC 0,75 /dia e a exigência de proteína líquida para mantença em 1,73 g/kg PC 0,75 /dia. O conteúdo de proteína no PCVZ dos animais diminui de 157,83 para 144,33 g/kg PCVZ quando o peso corporal aumentou de 15 para 30 kg, respectivamente. A quantidade de proteína depositada no ganho diminuiu de 137,47 para 125,71 g/kg GPCVZ com o aumento do peso corporal de 15 para 30 kg, respectivamente. A excreção fecal de nitrogênio e exigência líquida de proteína para mantença de ovinos Santa Inês em crescimento foi inferior ao preconizado pelos principais sistemas de avaliação de alimentos e exigências nutricionais para pequenos ruminantes.Palavras-chave: ganho de peso, mantença, proteína metabolizável Body composition and net protein requirements for growing Santa Inês sheepABSTRACT -This study evaluated the effect of different dietary levels of metabolizable energy on the body composition and net protein requirements of 24 Santa Inês non-castrated growing sheep at average age of 50 days and average body weight of 13.00 ± 0.56 kg. RESUMENLos ovinos de pelo juegan un papel importante en la producción animal en las regiones tropicales; sin embargo, sus requerimientos nutricionales no se han determinado en la misma medida que los de las razas de lana. Debido a las condiciones ambientales de las regiones tropicales (clima, calidad y disponibilidad de alimentos), es razonable la hipótesis de que los requerimientos de energía metabolizable (EM) y la eficiencia de utilización de la EM pueden ser diferentes entre los ovinos de razas de pelo y de lana. La información disponible en ovinos de pelo muestra una gran discrepancia en cuanto a las necesidades de energía. Con base en datos de la literatura disponible para hembras ovinas, el requerimiento de EM para mantenimiento (EM m ) fue de 419±129 kJ/kg PC 0.75 (media ± desviación estándar) y para machos fue 388±123 kJ/kg BW 0.75 . El requerimiento de energía neta para la ganancia de peso (EN g ) varió de 8.75 a 14.06 kJ/g (11.63±1.86 kJ/g). Las eficiencias de utilización de la EM para el mantenimiento (k m ) y la ganancia de peso (k g ) fueron de 0.66±0.023 y 0.42±0.044, respectivamente. Esta revisión también indicó que la información es escasa para ovejas adultas en diferentes etapas fisiológicas (mantenimiento, lactancia y gestación). Se requiere más trabajo de investigación con relación a la estimación de las necesidades de energía de los ovinos de pelo, con el fin de hacer ajustes a los modelos existentes de alimentación, con el objetivo de predecir la respuesta de los animales con la condición que prevalece en los trópicos (tipo de animal, medio ambiente y alimentos disponibles).PALABRAS CLAVE: Ovinos de pelo, Requerimientos de energía, Trópicos, Mantenimiento, Ganancia, Eficiencia. Due to the environmental conditions of the tropical regions (climate, quality and availability of feedstuffs), it is reasonable to hypothesize that energy requirements and efficiency of utilization of metabolizable energy (ME) may be different between hair and wool breeds of sheep. Information available on hair sheep shows a large discrepancy regarding energy requirements. Based on available literature data for female sheep, ME requirement for maintenance (ME m ) was 419±129 kJ/ kgBW 0.75 (mean ± standard deviation) and for the male 388±123 kJ/kg BW 0.75 . We aimed to evaluate the effects of diets, based on elephant grass or sugarcane as roughage and corn meal or rice bran as energy concentrate, on performance and body composition in terms of diet intake and digestibility. A total of 30 Santa Ines crossbreds (SIC), castrated male sheep with 19.8 ± 2.0 kg initial body weight (BW) were used. Six animals were slaughtered at the onset of the experiment to estimate the initial body composition for the other animals. The remaining 24 animals were distributed in a completely randomized 2 × 2 factorial design, with four treatments (two roughages and two concentrates) and six replicates. The sheep were slaughtered when they reached 30.0 kg BW. Elephant grass diets provided higher intake and digestibility than sugarcane diets for the following contents: dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fibre, minerals, total carbohydrates (TC), and total digestible nutrients (TDN). Among the concentrates, corn meal diets were associated with higher intakes than rice bran diets for the following contents: DM, OM, CP, TC, and TDN. Animals from all of the treatments exhibited low average daily weight gain and low protein and high fat and energy body levels. Sugarcane and rice bran can be used as ingredients in diets for sheep with low weight gain potential. Regardless of roughage or concentrate types used in diets for confined SIC sheep, performance and body composition remained unaltered.
