Las lagunas costeras en la actualidad presentan problemas de contaminación, éstos se deben principalmente a las descargas de actividades antropogénicas y a procesos fisicoquímicos y ecofisiológicos que ocurren en estos sistemas; uno de estos problemas es la acumulación de metales pesados en aguas, sedimentos y organismos afines a este ecosistema. Es por ello que el objetivo de este estudio fue determinar las concentraciones de cadmio en concha y tejido del gasterópodo N. reclivata y usarlo como bioindicador de contaminación en la laguna de Tampamachoco Veracruz; para conocer la concentración de Cd que existe en Neritina reclivata en la laguna de Tampamachoco Veracruz; se seleccionaron seis puntos de muestreo, cada muestra consistió en 100 ± 120 organismos, se separaron las conchas del tejido y se digestaron por separado de acuerdo a la NOM, para cada muestra se analizó la concentración de Cd, mediante espectrofotometría de absorción atómica, encontrando en tejido concentraciones de 1.55 ± 0.98 mg/kg y en concha de 0.77 ± 0.68 mg/kg. El Cadmio superó en todas las muestras los límites permisibles que establecen las normas sanitarias para gasterópodos y se estima que presentan un riesgo para la salud humana.
