Las lagunas costeras en la actualidad presentan problemas de contaminación, éstos se deben principalmente a las descargas de actividades antropogénicas y a procesos fisicoquímicos y ecofisiológicos que ocurren en estos sistemas; uno de estos problemas es la acumulación de metales pesados en aguas, sedimentos y organismos afines a este ecosistema. Es por ello que el objetivo de este estudio fue determinar las concentraciones de cadmio en concha y tejido del gasterópodo N. reclivata y usarlo como bioindicador de contaminación en la laguna de Tampamachoco Veracruz; para conocer la concentración de Cd que existe en Neritina reclivata en la laguna de Tampamachoco Veracruz; se seleccionaron seis puntos de muestreo, cada muestra consistió en 100 ± 120 organismos, se separaron las conchas del tejido y se digestaron por separado de acuerdo a la NOM, para cada muestra se analizó la concentración de Cd, mediante espectrofotometría de absorción atómica, encontrando en tejido concentraciones de 1.55 ± 0.98 mg/kg y en concha de 0.77 ± 0.68 mg/kg. El Cadmio superó en todas las muestras los límites permisibles que establecen las normas sanitarias para gasterópodos y se estima que presentan un riesgo para la salud humana.
La Laguna de Tampamachoco, Veracruz tiene gran importancia económica y ecológica ya que es una de las más ricas en especies de peces, moluscos, crustáceos y bivalvos. Los bivalvos desempeñan un papel importante, debido a sus hábitos pueden actuar como filtradores biológicos, así como bioindicadores. La cavidad intervalvar y los tejidos acumulan toxinas y contaminantes, entre los más comunes son las bacterias de coliformes. Para este estudio, se realizaron 3 muestreos durante un periodo anual en seis sitios de muestreo, con el objetivo de determinar la calidad bacteriológica de Isognomon alatus en la Laguna Tampachoco. Para este estudio se usaron bacterias coliformes fecales y totales como indicadores de contaminación, los cuales fueron determinados con el método de tubos múltiples de fermentación (Número Más Probable NMP) con series de cinco tubos. La mayor concentración de coliformes totales fue de540 NMP/100g para el mes de octubre del 2012 y 460 NMP/100g en enero del 2012 en los sitios Restinga Grande y Punta Rica. Mientras para coliformes fecales todos los valores registrados estuvieron por debajo del Límite Máximo Permitido de 230 NMP/100g por la NOM-242-SSA1-2002. Los resultados mostraron que la cantidad de coliformes fecales presentes en I. alatus y de acuerdo a la normatividad, indicó que no existe contaminación alguna de acuerdo a lo establecido.
A nivel mundial, las lagunas costeras son consideradas como ambientes de alta productividad y una elevada riqueza en biodiversidad. Están situadas a lo largo del litoral que en la mayoría de los casos tienen una comunidad permanente con el mar como es el caso de la laguna de Tampamachoco, Veracruz. Biológicamente, la zona costera y marina del Golfo de México representa una región de gran valor ecológico y económico para México ya que tiene una gran diversidad de ecosistemas marinos y recursos naturales. Los metales pesados son elementos naturales de la corteza terrestre, rocas, suelos, sedimentos, erupciones volcánicas y del agua. Existen cambios en sus concentraciones debido al uso extensivo en la industria y actividades humanas. Este estudio tuvo como objetivo el determinar si se encuentran presentes los metales pesados Ba, Cu y Hg en organismos de lebrancha (Mugil curema Valenciennes, 1836). Se muestrearon peces para el análisis cuantitativo de los metales pesados. El método que se utilizó se hizo en base a la Norma Oficial Mexicana NOM-117-SSA1-1994 mediante la técnica “Espectrometría de absorción atómica”. Se hicieron 14 muestreos del 2009 al 2010. La concentración promedio en tejidos para el músculo fue de Ba= 9.66 mg/kg, Cu= 3.33 mg/kg; en piel fue de Ba= 14.40 mg/kg, Cu= 6.28 mg/kg; en branquias fue de Ba= 43.26 mg/kg, Cu= 8.13 mg/kg; y finalmente en hígado fue de Ba= 7.57 mg/kg, Cu= 25.99 mg/kg. Las concentraciones que se hallaron en los tejidos de M. curema principalmente en las branquias son el tejido principal de recolección de los metales pesados, ya que la respiración es un factor determinante en la bioacumulación de estos contaminantes.
