Objectives: The aim of the study was to establish the changes in posteroanterior cephalometric variables in subjects with temporomandibular joint disorders (TMDs). Methods: Posteroanterior cephalograms of 61 subjects (age range 16-36.6 years, standard deviation 4.88 years) were used to determine cephalometric differences. Subjects were classified according to the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Joint Disorders into three groups: unilateral TMD, bilateral TMD and no TMD. 14 linear and angular measurements were assessed on the posteroanterior cephalogram. For assessing facial asymmetry, the asymmetry index for bilateral measurements was calculated between the right and the left side. In cases with unilateral TMD, the asymmetry index was calculated using the difference between the unaffected and affected side. The differences among multiple groups were analysed using the one-way analysis of variance test and Scheffé post hoc test. Results: 47 subjects were females (77%) and 14 were males (23%). 19 subjects had unilateral TMDs and 16 subjects had bilateral TMDs. The asymmetry index of the distance from the horizontal plane to the antegonion was higher in subjects with unilateral TMD than in patients with bilateral or no TMD (p , 0.05). Also, the asymmetry index of the distances from the vertical plane to the condyle (p 5 0.05), gonion (Go) (p 5 0.0004), antegonion (p 5 0.002) and chin (Ch) (p 5 0.02) was higher in subjects with unilateral TMDs. The asymmetry index of the O point-Go-Go9 and O point-Ch-Ch9 angles differed significantly in subjects with unilateral TMDs (p , 0.05). Conclusions: Unilateral TMDs are associated with changes in posteroanterior cephalometric measurements. The assessment of posteroanterior cephalometric variables could be used as a key factor for evaluating the presence of TMDs.
Our study highlights the existence of changes on coronal MRI in TMD patients which should be assessed for better understanding of the clinical evolution of temporomandibular disorders.

IntroductionTo establish the skeletal pattern in subjects with malocclusions and temporomandibular disorders (TMD); to assess the relationship between craniofacial skeletal structures and TMD in subjects with malocclusions.Material and methodsSixty-four subjects with malocclusions, over 18 years of age, were included in the study. Temporomandibular disorders were clinically assessed according to the Helkimo Anamnestic Index. Subjects underwent a lateral cephalogram. Subjects were grouped according to the sagittal skeletal pattern (ANB angle) into class I, II and III. Parametric Student tests with equal or unequal variations were used (variations were previously tested with Levene test).ResultsTwenty-four patients with TMD (experimental sample); 40 patients without TMD (control group); interincisal angle was higher in class I and II (p < 0.05) experimental subjects; overjet was larger in experimental subjects; midline shift and Wits appraisal were broader in the experimental group in all three classes. In class III subjects, the SNB angle was higher in the experimental group (p = 0.01). Joint noises followed by reduced mandible mobility, muscular pain and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain were the most frequent symptoms in subjects with TMD and malocclusions.ConclusionsTemporomandibular joint status is an important factor to consider when planning orthodontic treatment in patients with severe malocclusions; midline shift, large overjet and deep overbite have been associated with signs and symptoms of TMD.
(1) Background: This study aimed to perform a literature review related to disk displacement (DD) in class II malocclusion or cervical vertebrae position alterations and to report a hypodivergent case with cervical pain and right anterolateral DD with reduction, left anterolateral DD with reduction, and left joint effusion. (2) Methods: A structured electronic search was conducted between March 2022 and April 2022, without time limits, following PRISMA guidelines, in the following databases: PubMed, Scopus, Embase and Cochrane; the terms “disc displacement”, “disk displacement”, “temporomandibular joint”, “class II malocclusion” and “cervical vertebrae” are searched. (3) Results: the following thirteen publications are included in this review: two prospective studies and eleven cross-sectional studies; for evaluating disk position, eight included publications used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), whilst six studies used lateral cephalogram to determine craniofacial morphology and relationships between the cranial base, vertical skeletal pattern, maxilla and mandible. (4) Conclusions: although the literature still shows contradictory opinions, a relationship between temporomandibular disorders and cervical posture has been shown in the presented case as well as in the literature review.
Background: For the past two and half years, dentists all across the world, along with their patients, have faced numerous challenges. In this context, the aim of this integrative review was to assess if dentists’ and patients’ attitudes regarding teledentistry (TD) have changed since the COVID-19 outbreak, and if the use of TD will continue to rise, even in the post-pandemic period; (2) Methods: A literature search was performed between August 2021 and January 2022. The PubMed, Scopus, and Science Direct databases were searched for articles published between 2012 and 2022 using a combination of the following Mesh terms: “COVID-19”, “pandemic”, “oral telemedicine”, “teledentistry”; (3) Results: Among the 52 included papers, nine papers were published between 2011 and 2019, and 43 articles were published after 2020 (12 were published in 2020, 29 papers were published in 2021, and two in 2022). Among the articles published before 2020, seven out of nine included papers were reviews, and two were original research. Among the 43 papers published after 2020, 18 were reviews and 25 original research. (4) Conclusions: Based on the results of this integrative review, there is clear evidence that the interest in teledentistry and teleassistance in the dental field has increased rapidly, especially in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, while dental practitioners should be encouraged to keep themselves updated about new technologies, patients should also be constantly informed about their options for receiving special oral health care.
Objectives Psoriasis is an inflammatory condition brought on by the immune system. This study aimed to perform a systematic review related to psoriatic arthritis (PsA) of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Methods The search strategy was developed by a radiologist expert with more than 20 years of experience. The search was performed without time restrictions in five electronic databases: PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Scopus and Ovid. The search strategy was based on MeSH and Emtree terms. The methodological quality of the studies was rated using the quality assessment tools from the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI). Results Twenty‐three publications were included, 10 being case reports. One hundred‐fifty‐one patients with TMJ PsA were reported. Psoriasis evolution ranged from 1.5 years to 24 years. Clinical symptoms of TMJ involvement included: TMJ pain and sounds, limited range of jaw movements, preauricular swelling, malocclusion, headache, tinnitus, neck stiffness and altered dietary function. TMJ was evaluated by magnetic resonance imaging (six studies), computed tomography (eight articles) and by ultrasonography findings (two articles). For TMJ treatment, topical and systemic medication was reported in 11 studies. Five studies included patients needing surgical procedures for TMJ ankylosis. Conclusions A relationship between TMD and psoriasis has been revealed. TMJ PsA has been investigated and debated, although the radiographic findings or clinical symptoms of PsA are not noticeably different from other forms of TMJ arthritis. Conservative therapy can lead to significant improvement of TMJ function.
