AbstractPurpose -The purpose of this research paper is to study the enablers of Six Sigma and to establish relationship among them using interpretive structural modeling (ISM). Design/methodology/approach -The research paper presents a blend of theoretical framework and practical applications. In the paper, 11 enablers of Six Sigma are identified from literature survey and experts' opinion and then these are validated by questionnaire survey in India. Finally, ISM is used to obtain structural relationship among these enablers of Six Sigma. Findings -The ISM-based model indicates that "effective top management leadership role", "availability of funds" and "availability of expert training" are strategic requirements; "organizational culture", "organizational infrastructure", "quality maturity level of organization", and "employees' adaptability and flexibility towards learning" are tactical requirements. "Statistical thinking", "committed work force", "reliable data gathering and retrieval system", and "technical competence" are operational requirements for Six Sigma applications. Originality/value -Enablers are the building blocks for deployment of Six Sigma. To know the key enablers and relationship among them can help many organizations to develop Six Sigma competences. It is one of the foremost attempts to model enablers of Six Sigma. The paper provides useful insights to the Six Sigma implementers, consultants, and researchers.
The importance of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to the economy and the industrialised world as a whole is well known. Six sigma is one of the popular quality initiative used worldwide. The objectives of this paper are to get strength, barriers, enablers and possible solutions to implement six sigma in small and medium industries. The research methodology adopted is questionnaire-based research, followed by development of standard solution matrix for manufacturing-related problems. The concept is developed based on the theory of inventive problem solving (TRIZ). Finally, the methodology to apply six sigma to SMEs has been suggested. Use of contradiction matrix for problem solving gives a new line of thinking for solution, interestingly most of conventional manufacturing problems of six sigma can be tackled by selected standard principles. This paper is of great value for managers, engineers and implementers of six sigma in SMEs. It provides new insights to integrate TRIZ with six sigma in manufacturing industries. Keywords: SMEs/MSME; small and medium enterprises/micro, small and medium enterprise; six sigma; TRIZ; theory of inventive problem solving.Reference to this paper should be made as follows: Soti, A., Shankar, R. and Kaushal, O.P. Six Sigma is a proven strategy for creating maximum value for its customers, employees and shareholders. Still, it is noticed that a lot of recourses are normally consumed to deploy Six Sigma in organisation, which is associated with risk involved in its success. There is a need to review and enhance the tool kit of Six Sigma for making it more effective. Theory of Inventive Problem Solving (TRIZ) plays an important role for this purpose. This paper discusses about tool kit of TRIZ which is used to enhance the success of Six Sigma implementation. An integrated tool kit has been developed and tested during a live Six Sigma project in a manufacturing industry. A questionnaire-based survey has been conducted to validate the benefits of this integrated tool kit. It has been observed that users of Six Sigma are not very much familiar with TRIZ tools. It is also established that TRIZ can improve the effectiveness and efficiency of Six Sigma tools. This paper is of great value to various industries, researchers, managers and engineers involved in Six Sigma implementation/research. This paper provides insight into the actual benefits of deployment of TRIZ in Six Sigma projects in a manufacturing environment.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
