Periodic assessment of the genetic progress made in recurrent selection programs is essential for assessing the evolution of the programs and identifying the main factors that have contributed to this progress. This study aimed to estimate genetic progress in grain yield, plant height and days-to-flowering achieved in the CNA6 population of upland rice (Oryza sativa L.), after four cycles of recurrent selection; and evaluate the genetic potential of this population to generate superior inbred lines after each selection cycle. The experimental data were obtained from progeny yield trials of each recurrent selection cycle. These trials were carried out in two or three locations per cycle, and consisted of S 0:2 progenies and at least three checks. Federer's augmented block design, with one replication on location (the environment), was adopted.Results revealed genetic progress for grain yield and plant height, with total genetic gains of 375.87 kg ha −1 and -3.90 cm, respectively, during the four selection cycles. The annual relative gain observed for grain yield was 1.54 %. The genetic potential of the population was analysed by the expected proportion of superior inbred lines. The standard adopted as the limit for obtaining superior inbred lines was the average of the checks for each trait. The genetic potential for grain yield and plant height increased during the study period. For days-to-flowering, no genetic gain occurred; however, the genetic potential of the population to generate superior inbred lines for this trait was maintained after the selection cycles.

The characterization and identification of genetically divergent parents for crosses are important tasks in snap bean breeding programs, for a greater availability of cultivars to growers. This study aimed at characterizing bush snap bean genotypes originating from different countries; assessing the genetic divergence between the genotypes and the genetic variability extent, concerning 12 agro-morphological traits; and determining the relative importance of these traits for the genetic divergence. The experiment was conducted in a randomized complete block design, with 29 genotypes and four replications. The UPGMA and Tocher optimization methods, both based on the generalized distance of Mahalanobis, and the canonical variables method were used to analyze the genetic divergence. The genotypes exhibited a wide range of genetic variability for the agro-morphological traits evaluated, mainly for 100-seed weight, aspect and yield of commercial pods, plant height at harvest and pod weight. A high genetic divergence was detected between the genotypes, in which the 100-seed weight and aspect of commercial pods were the most important traits for clustering. Some genotypes own desirable characteristics for these and other traits, given the favorable genetic associations between traits. The snap bean genotypes originated from different countries tended to cluster together, indicating that similar germplasm is shared among different countries, thus suggesting a strong trans-national seed exchange.

Em Goiás, o pequi (Caryocar brasiliense) se destaca, dentre as frutíferas nativas do Cerrado, como promissora para a produção comercial. Um dos obstáculos para a sua produção em grande escala, no entanto, é o fato de que a germinação de sementes seja baixa e irregular. Com o objetivo de avaliar a emergência de sementes de pequizeiro e o desenvolvimento inicial de mudas oriundas de 16 plantas, aos dez meses após a colheita, na presença e ausência de ácido giberélico (GA3), foram conduzidos dois experimentos. O primeiro foi implantado em delineamento de blocos ao acaso, com parcelas subdivididas, tendo as matrizes nas parcelas e, nas subparcelas, um tratamento de imersão por 48 horas, em água pura e em solução de 500 mg L-1 de GA3. Foram realizadas avaliações a cada sete dias, para determinação da percentagem final, tempo médio e índice de velocidade de emergência. Para o segundo experimento, foi utilizado delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com número variado de repetições, de acordo com o número de mudas obtidas no primeiro experimento. Para percentagem, índice de velocidade e tempo médio de emergência, o efeito dos tratamentos foi significativo, sendo que, para os dois primeiros, houve interação significativa entre genótipo e tratamento, para superação da dormência. Observou-se que a utilização de 500 mg L-1 de ácido giberélico pode minimizar a dormência em sementes de Caryocar brasiliense e que o crescimento das matrizes em campo foi linear e contínuo, ao longo do tempo.

-The objective of this work was to evaluate the feasibility of using physiological parameters for water deficit tolerance, as an auxiliary method for selection of upland rice genotypes. Two experiments -with or without water deficit -were carried out in Porangatu, in the state of Goiás, Brazil; the water deficit experiment received about half of irrigation that was applied to the well-watered experiment. Four genotypes with different tolerance levels to water stress were evaluated. The UPLRI 7, B6144F-MR-6-0-0, and IR80312-6-B-3-2-B genotypes, under water stress conditions, during the day, showed lower stomatal diffusive resistance, higher leaf water potential, and lower leaf temperature than the control. These genotypes showed the highest grain yields under water stress conditions, which were 534, 601, and 636 kg ha -1 , respectively, and did not differ significantly among them. They also showed lower drought susceptibility index than the other genotypes. 'BRS Soberana' (susceptible control) was totally unproductive under drought conditions. Leaf temperature is a easy-read parameter correlated to plant-water status, viable for selecting rice genotypes for water deficit tolerance.Index terms: Oryza sativa, leaf diffusive resistance, leaf temperature, leaf-water potential. Dois experimentosum com e outro sem deficit hídrico -foram realizados em Porangatu, GO; o com deficit hídrico recebeu cerca da metade da irrigação que foi aplicada ao tratamento bem irrigado. Avaliaram-se quatro genótipos com diferentes níveis de tolerância ao estresse hídrico. Os genótipos UPLRI 7, B6144F-MR-6-0-0 e IR80312-6-B-3-2-B, em condições de estresse hídrico ao longo do dia, apresentaram menor resistência difusiva estomática, maior potencial de água nas folhas e menor temperatura das folhas do que a testemunha. Esses genótipos apresentaram as maiores produtividades em condições de deficiência hídrica, que foram respectivamente 534, 601 e 636 kg ha -1 , e não diferiram significativamente entre si. Eles também apresentaram menores índices de susceptibilidade à seca do que os outros genótipos. 'BRS Soberana' (testemunha suscetível) foi totalmente improdutiva em condições de deficiência hídrica. -The objective of this work was to estimate genetic and phenotypic parameters among progenies of the CNA6 population of upland rice (Oryza sativa) for grain yield and plant height in four cycles of recurrent selection, in order to evaluate the genetic variability and the genotype × location interaction. The experimental data were obtained from yield trials of S 0:2 progenies, which were carried out in the experimental design of Federer's augmented blocks, without replications for progenies within each location. The effect of S 0:2 progenies was significant in all cycles for grain yield and in the first three cycles for plant height, indicating the maintenance of the population's genetic potential to generate transgressive progenies. The participation of the component of the progeny × location interaction in phenotypic variance was of high magnitude. Os dados experimentais foram obtidos de ensaios de rendimentos de progênies S 0:2 , conduzidos em delineamento experimental de blocos aumentados de Federer, sem repetição para progênies por local. O efeito de progênies S 0:2 foi significativo em todos os ciclos para produtividade de grãos e nos três primeiros ciclos para altura de plantas, o que é indicativo da manutenção do potencial genético da população em gerar progênies transgressivas. A participação do componente da interação progênie × local na variância fenotípica foi de alta magnitude. Rice has extensive collections of germplasm, but a small fraction of genotypes are used in breeding programs worldwide. This aimed to assess the heterosis and the combining ability for higher grain yield and earliness, and their correlations to genetic distance among accessions belonging to the Embrapa´s Rice Core Collection. Crosses were made in complete diallel, without the reciprocals, being phenotyped in generations F 2 and F 7 for grain yield (GY) and days to flowering (DTF). It were estimated the varietal effect, mean heterosis, varietal heterosis, specific combining abilityand general combining ability (GCA) of the parents in each generation. For the selection of new lines, the combinations involving the genitors with the highest magnitudes and positive effects for GCA were considered more promising for the GY, of which Canela Curta, Maninjau, Epagri 108 and Diamante stood out, and were also the most productive. For the DTF, the genitors with the largest earliness estimates were Araguaia, CT11632, Irat 122, Pratinha Branco and Tox 503. The recommended parameters for estimating GY in F 7 generation from the data of the F 2 generation were the mean of GY, GCA and the mean Rogers-W genetic distance coefficient. Crosses with Rogers-W distance coefficients above 0.9 showed higher GY and earliness in F 7 generation, whereas in F 2 the superior crosses were those that showed Rogers-W between 0.7 and 0.89. The above genotypes and the specific combinations identified may lead to new rice cultivars.
