Aim: The objective of this study was to identify the preferred bait of local dogs in Bali and estimate oral rabies vaccination (ORV) success in locations with varying geographic and demographic conditions. In addition, an evaluation of potential direct and indirect contact with the placebo sachet contents was conducted. Methods: The study was a randomized controlled trial conducted in two pilot areas of Bali using imported and hand-made baits. All dogs were offered a single bait containing a sachet of blue-dyed water using the “hand-out and retrieve” technique. Several methods were used to determine the likelihood of contact with the placebo vaccine. Comparing ORV with capture-vaccinate-release (CVR) methods, field officers were given Google Forms questions to answer. Statistical analysis was performed using univariate contingency table testing, followed by the development of a multiple logistic regression (MLR) model. Results: With 96.9% acceptance, intestine was the most popular bait for local dogs in Bali, and egg bait came in second (81.1%). However, the egg bait was 95.2% effective in releasing the vaccine in the oral cavity, followed by the intestine at 82.6%. 6.1% of surveyed households had direct contact with a dog that had recently consumed a vaccine bait. A survey among field officers also indicated that they preferred ORV over CVR, as the former is more suitable for vaccinating inaccessible dogs and less stressful for the teams and the animals. Conclusion: In Bali, both a locally-made intestine bait and an industrially-produced egg-flavored bait were readily taken up by local dogs. There is a small risk that people can come into contact with dogs previously offered a bait; hence, only vaccines with a high safety profile should be used. ORV can replace the currently used CVR method for vaccinating free-roaming dogs as a complementary tool to increase vaccination coverage.
During 2022, outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) were reported across the islands of Indonesia, a country that had previously maintained an FMD-free (without vaccination) status since 1990. This report describes the near-complete genome sequence of a representative FMD virus collected from these cases belonging to the O/ME-SA/Ind-2001e lineage.
Indonesia governs the post-entry observation through the Animal Quarantine Installation (AQI) as a precautionary measure to minimize the risk of the entrance and the spread of animal infectious organism and disease of import animals. However, wastes generated from their activities are potentially pollute the environment. This research aimed to evaluate the pollution from AQI activity on its receiving water body. The study was conducted at 5 companies as follow: PT. A, PT. B, PT. C, PT. D, and PT. E. The samples were taken from their wastewater and the river where the waste was discarded with two replications. Direct measurement was carried out in the field by using water quality equipment to analyze pH, temperature, DO, and TDS. For other analysis, samples collected were preserved in refrigerator at 4 °C before laboratory testing was carried out to minimize microbiological decomposition of solids. Pollution variabels were analyzed by analysis of variance test (ANOVA) with 95% confidence level followed by turkey test. The results showed that there was no difference in pollution from temperature, DO, TDS, TSS, COD, and ammonia variables from 5 companies. In contrast, two variables i.e., pH and BOD indicating the difference among 5 companies (P<0.05). In conclusion, the results of wastewater variables from large-ruminant AQI activity were generally exceeding the Quality Standard of Wastewater for cattle-farming. Thus there is a pollution of water bodies in the environment around AQI due to their activities.
Pengelolaan limbah di IKH dapat ditingkatkan dengan cara meningkatkan pengetahuan melalui pelatihan sistem manajemen lingkungan sesuai ISO 14001:2015, pelatihan AMDAL dan UKL/UPL serta pengetahuan mengenai risiko penyakit yang mungkin terbawa oleh limbah IKH.AbstractWaste from large ruminant animal quarantine installations (IKH) can be a source of disease transmission that may be carried away due to livestock traffic and can cause environmental problems. The purpose of this study was to analyze the characteristics, knowledge and attitudes of IKH officers to influence the practice of waste management in IKH. Respondents were officers who carry out waste management in IKH. The relationship and magnitude of direct and indirect effects on observed variables were analyzed using path analysis. The results showed that overall the characteristics, knowledge and attitudes of IKH officers had an effect of 68.85%. The influence is described as a direct influence of 22.76% and indirectly by 46.09% on the practice of waste management in IKH. The practice of waste management in IKH is influenced by significant knowledge and attitudes. Attitudes are influenced by knowledge of waste management in IKH. Waste management in IKH can be improved by increasing knowledge through training in environmental management systems in accordance with ISO 14001: 2015, training on AMDAL and UKL / UPL as well as knowledge about the risk of diseases that may be carried out by IKH waste.
