The positive impact of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) programs on student achievement, attitude, interest, communication skills and problem-solving has alerted the education community to reform instructional approaches in STEM subjects. This meta-analysis study aims to analyze previous studies' results of STEM program impacting students' mathematics achievement. The criteria for inclusion of literature in the meta-analysis were: published between 1998 and 2017, employed experimental research design, and reported data necessary for computing effect sizes. Based on the Hedges-g effect size values, three of the studies were categorized into the large effect category (n=3), two studies were classified under the medium effect group (n=2), and twelve studies were considered to be small effect sizes (n=12). The overall weighted average effect size was 0.242 with a corresponding p-value of 0.023 demonstrating that STEM had an impact on student mathematics achievement. However, no evidence was found concerning the impact of STEM program on students' mathematics achievement based on the three moderator variables: education level, publication source, and length of intervention. Limitations and implications of the study were discussed.
The aim of the study was to examine the effectiveness of the Discovery Learning Module on Geometry (D-Geometry Module) in improving reasoning skills, communication, and self-confidence in mathematics among secondary school students. The research design was a quasi-experimental with a non-equivalent control group with pre-test and post-test design, where 128 students were grouped according to gender and the group of the intervention as well as a traditional group. Mathematical reasoning skills, communication, and self-confidence instruments were administered towards the students involved. Two-way MANOVA analysis showed that there was a main effect of the grouping. The finding showed that the integration of learning theories and discovery learning in Geometry could improve students' reasoning, mathematical communication, and self-confidence. Students' engagement is more dominant through the Discovery Learning Module rather than traditional learning. Therefore, the D-Geometry module should be used as a teaching resource for teachers, students, and curriculum-2013 (K-13) to facilitate classroom instruction.
Teaching module is of immense importance for teachers to utilize during classroom instruction for helping students learning construction. The purpose of this study is to develop a geometry module (D-Geometry) based on the discovery learning theory. The ADDIE instructional model guided the need analysis, design, and development phases of the research. The first phase involves three aspects: synthesis of literature review, student analysis, and context analysis. The results of the need analysis showed ten levels of activities in the teaching and learning that molded the design of the D-Geometry module. The D-Geometry module focused on the lesson implementation plan, teacher book, student book, and activity sheets. It is hoped that the module can contribute to improving the mathematical curriculum in schools and student achievement. In producing quality mathematical learning, it is recommended that teachers utilize discovery learning when teaching mathematical topics. Future studies are needed to examine the effectiveness of the module on student mathematics learning outcomes.
Data dianalisis menggunakan uji Multivariate Analysis of Variance (Manova) dan Analysis of Variance (Anova). Kata Kunci: discovery, menekankan aspek analogi, prestasi belajar, kemampuan penalaran, kecerdasan emosional spiritual THE EFFECT OF DISCOVERY APPROACH EMPHASING ON THE ANALOGY ASPECT ON ACHIEVEMENT, REASONING ABILITY, EMOTIONAL SPIRITUAL INTELLIGENCE AbstractThis study aims to investigate the effect of quadrilateral and triangle teaching using the discovery approach emphasing on the analogy aspect on achievement, reasoning ability, and emotional spiritual intelligenceof Grade VII students of SMPN 9 Yogyakarta. This study was a quasi-experimental study.
