Our aim was to quantify the effects of forest plantation and management (clear cut or 30% partial harvest) in relation to pasture, on catchment discharge in southeast Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil. A paired‐catchment approach was implemented in two regions (Eldorado do Sul and São Gabriel municipalities) where discharge was measured for 4 years at three catchments in each region, two of which were predominantly eucalypt plantation (mainly Eucalyptus saligna, rotation of approximately 7–9 years) with native forest and grass in streamside zones. The third catchment was covered with grazed pasture. Weather, soils, canopy interception, groundwater level, tree growth, and leaf area index were also measured. The 3‐PG process‐based forest productivity model was adapted to predict spatial daily plantation and pasture water balance including precipitation interception, soil evaporation, transpiration, soil moisture, drainage, discharge, and monthly plantation growth. The TOPMODEL framework was used to simulate water pools and fluxes in the catchments. Discharge was higher under pasture than pre‐harvesting plantation and increased for 1–2 years after complete plantation harvest; this change was less pronounced in the catchments under partial harvest. The ratio of discharge to precipitation before harvesting varied from 7% to 13% in the eucalypt catchments and 28% to 29% under pasture. The ratio increases to 23–24% after total harvest, and to 17% after partial harvesting. The ratio under pasture also increases during this period (to 32–44%) owing to increased precipitation. The baseflow, in relation to total discharge, varied from 28% to 62% under Eucalyptus and from 38% to 43% in the pasture catchments. Hence, eucalypt plantations in these regions can be expected to influence discharge regimes when compared with pasture land use, and modelling suggests that partial harvesting would moderate the magnitude of discharge variation compared with a full catchment plantation harvesting. The model efficiency coefficient (Nash–Sutcliffe model efficiency coefficient) varied from 0.665 to 0.799 for the total period of the study. Simulation of alternative harvesting scenarios suggested that at least 20% of the catchment planted area must be harvested to increase discharge. This model could be a useful practical tool in various plantation forestry contexts around the world. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
One of the main diseases occurring in clonal nurseries of Eucalyptus spp. is powdery mildew caused by the fungus Oidium eucalypti. This work evaluated the efficiency of biological products based on Trichoderma spp. and Bacillus spp. applied as preventive and curative treatments for the control of Oidium eucalypti in clonal seedlings of E. benthamii Maiden et Cambage. Treatments were: Trichoderma harzianum (THP), T. atroviride (TAI), T. harzianum (THE), Trichoderma spp. (TTA), Bacillus spp. (BNE), Sulfur (KUM), Difenoconazol (SCO) and distilled water (AD). Treatments were applied preventively by spraying seven days before inoculation of the pathogen, and in curatively, ten days after inoculation. Weekly evaluations of the incidence and severity of the disease were done. The analyzed variables were: Disease Index (ID) and Incidence (I), calculating the area under the disease curve (AUDPC) for each treatment. The results pointed BNE (Bacillus spp.) and TAI (isolate T. atroviride) as effective preventive treatments and BNE (Bacillus spp.), applied curatively for the control of O. eucalypti in E. benthamii seedlings, proving that treatments based on biological products may be effective for controlling eucalyptus powdery mildew in clonal nurseries.
Erwinia psidii Rodrigues Neto et al. is a plant-pathogenic bacterium that causes serious damage to eucalyptus, guava and papaya crops in tropical and subtropical conditions (Chai et al., 2017;Coutinho et al., 2011;Rodrigues Neto et al., 1983). In South America, the bacterial pathogen was reported causing dieback on eucalyptus species in Argentina, Uruguay (Coutinho et al., 2011) and Brazil (Arriel et al., 2014). In Brazil, the incidence of eucalyptus bacterial blight on susceptible genotypes can reach 30% of trees in a production field (Borges-Junior et al., 2020). Besides dieback, the pathogen can cause leaf hydrosis (i.e. water-soaking) close to midrib, stem canker and
Powdery mildew is one of the main diseases in eucalyptus clonal nursery. The present work aimed to confirm the identity of the causal agent of powdery mildew in clonal seedlings of Eucalyptus spp., and to evaluate the susceptibility reaction of clones to this disease. Conidia were collected in minigardens for molecular identification of the pathogen. We assessed susceptibility by testing 4 clones: Clone 1 (Eucalyptus benthamii), Clone 2 (E. dunni), Clone 3 (E. benthamii) and Clone 4 (E. urophylla x E. globulus). Scale of classes was used for calculations of Disease Index (DI) and Final Incidence (I). Temporal analysis was performed using the Logistic and Gompertz models. The molecular identification confirmed the identity of the isolates approximate to Podosphaera pannosa (teleomorphic phase of Oidium eucalypti). The Gompertz model obtained a better adjustment to the severity and incidence data, and clones 1 and 2 showed greater susceptibility to eucalyptus powdery mildew.
This study aimed to develop and validate a standard area diagram (SAD) set to estimate the severity of bacterial blight of eucalyptus caused by Erwinia psidii. For this purpose, an eight-level SAD was developed and validated by ten inexperienced raters. Accuracy and precision of the estimates by each rater, with and without the SAD, were determined based on Lin’s concordance correlation coefficient. The proposed SAD improved the accuracy and precision of the estimates. The SAD set studied here is a useful tool in assessments of bacterial blight of eucalyptus for epidemiological research and breeding programs.
