-The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of shoot heading and of hand thinning in different development stages of flowers and fruits on the fruit production and quality of 'BRS Kampai' peach (Prunus persica) trees. The experiment was performed during three crop years, under the conditions of the "Depressão Central" region in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, and the treatments were: T1, heading of half of the mixed shoot; T2, heading of one third of the mixed shoot; T3, flower thinning in the pink bud stage; T4, thinning at full bloom; T5, thinning of fruit with 5 mm; T6, thinning of fruit with 20 mm; and T7, no thinning or heading (control). Fruit production and quality were evaluated. Plants with no thinning were more productive, but showed high frequency of fruits with a diameter smaller than 60 mm. Shoot heading reduced production per tree and resulted in small-sized fruit. Thinning time did not affect production, and fruit size was greater when thinning was performed at the bloom stage. 'BRS Kampai' peach trees can be thinned starting at bloom, which provides greater fruit size, with no production loss.Index terms: Prunus persica, fruit quality, yield.

ABSTRACTThe adequate pruning management of grapevine permits to change its fenology, modifying the crop periods and creating conditions for two annual harvests. A winter pruning period (08/08/05) and two periods of summer pruning (04/11/ 05 and 02/12/05) were evaluated in order to obtain two annual harvests, using Niagara Branca and Concord grape varieties (both Vitis labrusca). This experiment was performed during the 2005/2006 season in grapevines conducted by cordon training in Eldorado do Sul county, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Variables associated to fenology, plant production, weight of grapes, total soluble solids, total titratable acidity and ratio total soluble solids by total titratable acidity related to harvests were analyzed. The fenology of plants pruned in winter was 156 days for 'Niagara Branca' and 161 days for 'Concord', and the harvest was performed around January, 15th. Regarding the summer pruning performed on 04/11/05 and 02/12/05, fenology cycle of shoots was 127 and 113 days for the 'Niagara Branca' and 134 and 120 days for the 'Concord', respectively. Harvest was realized in middle April, 15th. The summer pruning realized in 04/11/05 provided higher production per plant and grapes of higher weight, independent of cultivar, when compared to the 02/12/05 pruning. Fruit quality was similar among the harvests, with significant differences between cultivars expressed by smaller total titratable acidity and higher ...
HERBACEANS GRAFITING IN NATIVE MYRTACEAE IN RIO GRANDE DO SULABSTRACT -The objective of this study was to test the viability of the technique of green grafting in natives Myrtaceae. The experiment was conducted in greenhouse conditions of the Departamento de Horticultura e Silvicultura / UFRGS, in Porto Alegre. Two species of Myrtaceae were used, as well as rootstock and as graft, Eugenia uniflora (Surinam cherry) and E. involucrata (Rio-Grande-cherry or Cherry of the woods), totaling four combinations. The adopted grafting method consisted to cleft the graft on herbaceous branches, with an average diameter of the rootstock of 0.1 cm, while the branches of the grafts had an average diameter between 0.08 to 0.1 cm for both species. The observations were carried out every two weeks, and after 70 days were statistically analyzed. The experimental design was completely randomized with four replications, each experimental unit consisting of five grafts. The results indicated 60% of success in the combination Surinam cherry-Surinam cherry (rootstock-graft). When Surinam-cherry was grafted on Rio-Grande-cherry the low union obtained indicates the possibility of interspecific grafting.
Tetraploid citrus rootstocks may present different morphological characteristics and growth when compared to diploid ones. This worked aimed at comparing morphological characteristics and height growth of diploid and tetraploid plants from the rootstocks 'Swingle' citrumelo [C. paradise Macf. x Poncirus trifoliate (L.) Raf], citrange 'Troyer' (C. sinensis (L.) Osb. x P. trifoliata) and citranges 'Fepagro C 13' and 'Fepagro C 37' [C. sinensis cv. Pêra x P. trifoliata] during twelve months. Diploid (2n=18) and tetraploid (2n=36) plants originated from the same seed were identified, cultivated and evaluated every 45 days regarding color, height, petiole length, leaf length and central leaflet width. Significant differences were observed for the evaluated characteristics: the average of petiole length was 1.78 cm in the diploid and 0.99 cm in the tetraploid plants; the average of leaf length was 2.32 cm in the diploid and 2.95 cm in the tetraploid plants; the average of central leaflet width was 1.33 cm in the diploid and 1.69 cm in the tetraploid plants. Moreover, tetraploid plants had darker and thicker leaves than the diploid ones. Variation regarding height was observed and the diploid plants presented higher growth than the tetraploid ones. As tetraploid plants are smaller, have a slow height growth and wider and longer leaves.Key words: Citrus, morphology, leaf color, height, dwarfing. Palavr...
The 'Montenegrina' mandarin ( Citrus deliciosa Tenore) is widely cultivated in southern Brazil. This cultivar has a great tendency for alternate bearing, requiring thining of the fruit. However, the chemical thinners studied until now in this cultivar have not been successful. The objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of 3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinyloxyacetic acid (3,5,6-TPA) on the production and fruit quality of the 'Montenegrina' mandarin, in comparison with hand thinning and the options of chemical thinning previously studied. Hand thinning and no thinning were used as controls. Ethephon was applied in three doses: 200mg L-1, 300mg L-1 or 200mg L-1 + 3% urea; or 3,5,6-TPA, in four doses: 10, 20, 30 or 40mg L-1. Fruits of the hand thinned trees and those treated with 40mg L-1 showed greater average size, greater distribution of commercial caliber and more orange colors. No treatment reduced alternate bearing. Applications of 40mg L-1 of 3,5,6-TPA as a chemical thinner, during the physiological drop of young fruit, had a similar effect that of hand thinning over yield and quality of fruits of 'Montenegrina' mandarin.
