Waste tyre caused disposal problem in country all over the world. A lot of research has been done to make use of recycled tyre rubber to minimize waste tyre disposal problem. Recycled tyre rubber has been widely used for civil engineering application such as lightweight concrete and asphalt pavement. However only a few study focused on the development of material using recycled tyre rubber as drainage material for geotechnical purposes. This paper presents the experimental on properties of cement-based material consisting recycled tyre rubber. Specimens were prepared by incorporating different percentage of shredded rubber tyre with mortar. Summation of ten (10) mixes has been investigated to determine the compressive strength, density, porosity and water absorption. From the results, it is concluded that the higher percentage of shredded tyre rubber used, will decreased the compressive strength and increased the porosity and of the material.
UniCITI Alam is a mixed development of commercial buildings and medium rise apartments. The whole development was designed based on the integration of student residential community with the combined commercial centre and temporary campus. The lecture rooms are located at the second floor of the triple-storey shop house. To improve the indoor environmental quality and comfortability of the teaching and learning activities, physical measurements of the indoor environment parameters (air temperature, relative humidity and carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration) and light intensity are the main methods applied in the presented case study. Data collected will be compared with Malaysian Standard MS 1525: 2007 (Code of Practice on Energy Efficiency and Use of Renewable for Non Residential Building) and DOSH. The finding will be used for improving the environmental quality of the lecture rooms and enhancing the ecology circle.
This paper studies on the development of green concrete roof tiles by using rice husk ash (RHA) as a partial replacement of cement as a green material. Rice husk is a product of agricultural waste that can be found easily and in large quantities due to increased annual paddy production in Malaysia. Demand for cement in construction has increased over the years as a result of over dependence on the modern building materials, which are so expensive that low income earners cannot afford building houses of their own. Besides, the satisfaction of building users is closely related to thermal comfort which is a complex dynamics of temperature and humidity. In this study, cement was replaced by the RHA at 0% until 20% by weight. Roof tiles performance were assessed based on Malaysian Standard (MS) requirement comprised of transverse strength, water absorption and water permeability. Results show that up to 10% of RHA give a good performance of concrete roof tiles which comply with Malaysia Standard.
Abstract. Excessive lateral drift can contribute significantly towards crack formation, leading to structural damage. The structural damage will in turn reduce the capacity of the structure and weaken it from the intended design capacity. Generally, lateral drift is more pronounced in higher and longer structure, such as high rise buildings and bridges. A typical method employed to control lateral drift is structural bracing, which works by increasing stiffness and stability of structure. This paper reviews the influence of various types of structural bracing to structural performance of buildings. The history of structural bracing is visited and the differences between numerous structural bracing in term of suitability to different types of buildings and loading, mechanisms, technical details, advantages and limitations, and the overall effect on the structural behaviour and performance are dissected. Proper and efficient structural bracing is pertinent for each high rise building as this will lead towards safer, sustainable and more economical buildings, which are cheaper to maintain throughout the life of the buildings in the future.
