Purpose The underlining study’s main objective is to examine how networking structure (density and centrality) affects sustainable competitive performance in Pakistan’s SMEs. Design/methodology/approach Hence, small enterprises a significant source of economic development, employment, and value creation. Therefore, on the base of previous literature, we developed hypothesis related government financial support and network structure, and data collected through structured questionnaires from top management of SMEs. Findings The results indicate that density has a positive and significant effect on sustainable competitive performance, while centrality has an insignificant impact on SCP. Furthermore, government financial support strongly and significantly supports the relation between networking structure and SCP in Pakistan. Practical implications This research has several recommendations for the government to adequately support small enterprises because owners have a networking system at the local and international level but have a lack of environment. Originality/value Government plays a crucial role in small- and medium-sized enterprises boost performance and economic growth because it creates employment opportunities, poverty reduction, and economic development. Nevertheless, from the last decades, due to some organizational policies and environmental flexibility, SMEs face a lot of challenges which became a barrier such as lack of government subsidies, incentives, and taxes in emerging economies. To bridge the above challenges of SMEs, the current study is conducted because before this there was no such literature who underline the current challenges in emerging economies.
PurposeThe purpose of this paper was to examine how small- and medium-sized hospitality organisations engage with social media and how social media data are used by their managers to inform business decisions.Design/methodology/approachA qualitative approach was used in this research in which interviews were conducted with top management, comprising the owners/directors and other key managers from small- and medium-sized organisations based in Penang, Malaysia. Fan and Gordon's (2014) categorisation of the social media data analysis process and Simon's (1995) concept of the interactive and diagnostic usage of data were used in the analysis of data.FindingsThe managers of small- and medium-sized hospitality organisations engage with social media for customer relationship management and the understanding of key main competitors. Social media is used to understand, build and manage relationships with current and potential customers; these activities are also linked to actions taken to protect a company's reputation. Even though, for the companies concerned, data gathering is still at the capture stage with no formal procedures and processes in place, the data are utilised in an interactive way to inform two areas’ major business decisions-making, i.e. those related to pricing and promotion and the strategic formulation and reorientation of the business.Research limitations/implicationsThe respondents of this study were mainly from smaller hospitality organisations. Hence, the insights gained are limited to the context of smaller hotels.Originality/valueA significant number of social media studies within the hospitality sector have focussed on marketing aspects. This study explored the wider use of social media in the case of smaller hospitality organisations and how they compete and position themselves in the competitive hospitality industry.
Green Entrepreneurship is an emerging phenomenon in business and academic field because it is an essential component in developing a green economy. Due to a lack of empirical study on green entrepreneurship, our current understanding of the factors that contributes to nurturing green entrepreneurial intention is limited. By employing Theory of Planned Behaviour, this study aims to explore the relationship between predictors of green entrepreneurial intention such as attitude, perceived behavioural control, subjective norms and educational support to green entrepreneurial intention (GEI). The study samples 175 individual MBA students in Malaysia. The study employs Partial Least Squares – SEM to predict GEI and evaluate the contribution of each predictor in the relationships. The model explains 76.1% the variance of Green Entrepreneurial Intention with strong predictive relevance (R2=0.761, Q2=0.537). From the structural model, the beta coefficient for Perceived Attitude is 0.392, Perceived Behavioural Control is 0.399, and Perceived Educational Support is 0.169. The results imply that perceived attitude and perceived behavioural control are the key intrinsic determinants whereas education plays an instrumental role as an extrinsic determinant to individual interest to become a green entrepreneur. The main theoretical implication of this study is confirming the applicability of the Theory of Planned Behaviour in explaining GEI with additional variable, Perceived Educational Support. Practically, this research provides education practitioner and policymakers with useful insight on cultivating GEI among MBA students, and directional indication on grooming future green entrepreneurs.
Saudi Arabia is facing the rising of the global population and high resource use. The country needs to inculcate the adoption of sustainable practices, i.e. green building practices. However, adopting green building practices for a sustainable future requires fundamental changes in the way contractors build houses. This paper endeavours to conceptualize the elements that contribute to the adoption of green building among the contraction companies in Riyadh. Literature reviews and government document reviews are used for the conceptualization of the framework. Based on the resource-based view theory, the factors are conceptualized with small and medium-sized enterprise contractors as the subject of focus. This paper proposes that green builders or the construction companies’ internal resources, i.e. proactive entrepreneurial behaviour, are hypothesized to influence green building adoption. However, risk-taking and green product innovation are proposed to mediate the relationships. These factors are moderated by Saudi Arabian government support, financial and non-financial. By addressing these factors regarding green building practices, Saudi Arabia would be able to achieve sustainable development in the housing of its citizens.
In TVET teaching and learning, learners’ collaboration is important to ensure learning effectiveness. However, employing either design thinking or online problem-based learning would not lead to fruitarian. Hence, to devise teaching and learning that employs design thinking (DT) and online problem-based learning (ePBL) pedagogies used in tandem with social media learning environment in Facebook are hypothesized to improve TVET learner’s collaboration. By adopting the Social Constructivism learning theory that social interaction fosters collaborative learning and build learners’ knowledge and understanding, this study is commenced. Social interaction that fosters learners’ collaboration is moderated by type of learners’ self-regulation (SR) towards learning. Previous research hypothesized that ePBL alone only workedeffectively for high self-regulated learners. The learning outcome inequity present due to the pedagogy limitation. This research devises ePBL with DT as a combination of pedagogies that benefits the low SR learners as well. To monitor collaborative learning occurrences, network ties via social media footprints of individual TVET learners is tracked from the learners’ Facebook group. The effectiveness of treatments is monitored using social network analysis i.e. graph theory and centrality concept employing NodeXL software. Samples of 142 TVET pre-service teachers that currently enroll in Design and Technology course at Teachers’ Training Institutes in Malaysia participated in this study. The samples are intact group and classified into high-SR learners and low-SR learners. Social network analysis using Vertices index, Geodesic distance and graph visualization findings show that ePBL with DT works in fostering learning collaboration for both high-SR and low-SR learners. This implies that national e-learning policy and ePBL embeddedness into technical subject is promising, regardless of the type of learners provided that DT is incorporated into the pedagogy.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
