Pantun merupakan salah satu medium penting dalam pembentukan peradaban masyarakat Melayu. Melalui pantun, pelbagai nilai telah diterapkan sebagai alat untuk menegur, menasihati dan mengajar di antara ahli masyarakat. Nilai peradaban Melayu yang terdapat dalam pantun ini bukan sahaja terhad melalui pantun yang dihasilkan oleh masyarakat Melayu, malah terdapat juga dalam penciptaan pantun oleh masyarakat selain Melayu seperti Peranakan Baba. Masyarakat Peranakan Baba merupakan subetnik Cina yang terhasil daripada interaksi sosial dengan orang Melayu. Ini bermakna, Peranakan Baba telah mengalami proses akulturasi dengan nilai masyarakat Melayu. Aspek nilai yang dikongsi bersama ini dapat dilihat melalui penciptaan pantun oleh masyarakat Peranakan Baba. Kajian ini akan memberi fokus terhadap aspek nilai peradaban Melayu yang terdapat dalam pantun Peranakan Baba. Objektif utama kajian ini adalah untuk mengenal pasti dan menyenaraikan nilai-nilai tamadun Melayu yang dominan digunakan dalam pantun Peranakan Baba. Selain itu, proses akulturasi yang berlaku di antara masyarakat Melayu dan Peranakan Baba juga akan diberi penelitian. Kajian ini menggunakan kaedah analisis makna perkataan dan ayat yang terdapat dalam pantun yang dipilih melalui buku “Pantun Pilihan Peranakan Baba Negeri Selat, 1910-1930-an” yang disusun oleh Ding Choo Ming. Hasil kajian mendapati bahawa terdapat proses akulturasi yang berlaku dalam masyarakat Peranakan Baba melalui pantun yang dikaji. Data yang diperolehi ini penting sebagai rekod asas kepada kajian yang lebih terperinci berkaitan Peranakan Baba di Malaysia. Implikasi kajian akan mendorong pembentukan nilai kebersamaan di antara pelbagai kaum yang terdapat di Malaysia.Abstract: Pantun is one of the important mediums in the Malay civilization. Through pantun, various values have been applied as tools for reprimanding, advising and teaching among members of society. The value of Malay civilization found in this pantun is not limited only by the pantun produced by the Malay community, but also in the creation of pantun by non-Malay communities such as Peranakan Baba. The Peranakan Baba community is a Chinese subetnik resulting from social interaction with the Malays. This means that Peranakan Baba has undergone acculturation process with the value of the Malay community. This shared value aspect can be seen through the creation of pantun by the Peranakan Baba community. This study will focus on aspects of the value of Malay civilization found in the pantun Peranakan Baba. The main objective of this study is to identify and list the values of the dominant Malay civilization used in the Peranakan Baba pantun. In addition, the acculturation process applied between the Malay community and Peranakan Baba will also be subject to research. This study uses the method of analysis of the meaning of the words and sentences found in the pantun chosen through the book "Pantun Pilihan Baban Negeri Selat Negeri, 1910-1930" compiled by Ding Choo Ming. The results of the study found that there was an acculturation process that occurred in the Peranakan Baba society through the pantun studied. The data obtained is important as a fundamental record for a more detailed study of Peranakan Baba in Malaysia. The implications of the study will lead to the formation of the value of togetherness among the various races found in Malaysia.
The limited use of Jawi in the media has become a new challenge to Jawi enthusiasts. The influence of globalization and the community’s perception on Jawi has resulted in a state of concern regarding the use of Jawi especially in the mass media. Therefore, this study aims to obtain the perception of Malay students at Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) pertaining to the use of Jawi in the mass media. The main objective of this study is to examine the perception of Malay students in UNITEN upon the use of Jawi and the preservation of Jawi in the media. The Malay students represent the young generation in the society. This study employed a quantitative research method using questionnaire survey as a source of information regarding the issue investigated. The data obtained was analyzed using SPSS software version 20. The results showed that majority of the respondents had the idea that Jawi should be well-placed in the mass media. One of the important recommendations provided by the respondents is the role of the local authorities to make it compulsory for Jawi scripts to be on billboards and advertisements. This study is important as reference for the concerned parties for actions to be taken for the preservation of Jawi. Oleh itu, kajian ini berhasrat untuk mendapatkan persepsi dari kalangan pelajar Melayu di Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) berkaitan penggunaan tulisan Jawi di media massa. Objektif utama kajian ini adalah untuk menilai persepsi pelajar Melayu di UNITEN berkaitan usaha pemeliharaan tulisan Jawi dan penggunaan tulisan Jawi di media. Pelajar Melayu ini merupakan golongan muda yang mewakili generasi baru dalam masyarakat. Kajian ini menggunakan kaedah penyelidikan secara kuantitatif yang menggunakan borang soal selidik sebagai sumber maklumat berkaitan isu yang dikaji. Data yang diperolehi telah dianalisis menggunakan perisian SPSS versi 20. Hasil kajian menunjukkan majoriti responden berpendapat bahawa tulisan Jawi perlu mendapat kedudukan yang baik di media massa. Antara cadangan penting yang diberikan oleh responden adalah peranan pihak berkuasa tempatan untuk mewajibkan penggunaan tulisan Jawi pada papan tanda dan iklan. Kajian ini penting sebagai bahan rujukan kepada pihak berkaitan untuk tindakan seterusnya sebagai salah satu usaha pemeliharaan tulisan Jawi. The present study was conducted in order to discover the overall perception of the youth which was represented by 79 UiTM Penang Malay students regarding the actions that could be taken to expand the mastery of Jawi at various levels of education in Malaysia. This research employed a quantitative method via the administration of a questionnaire containing 20 items to each respondent involved. The items were designed to answer the research question of the study, “What is the perception of UiTM Penang Malay students towards the initiatives that can be taken in order to expand the teaching and learning of Jawi at various levels of education in Malaysia?” The results revealed that most of the respondents contributed positive views towards the exposure and practice of Jawi at various levels of education and supported some initiatives suggested for expanding the teaching and learning of Jawi. For example, 33 respondents (41.8%, M= 4.24, SD= 0.738) strongly agreed with item 9 (“In my opinion, Jawi subject needs to be offered at all levels of learning (primary, secondary and tertiary levels) so that its learning can be more comprehensive”). Obviously, the respondents in majority favor the teaching and learning of Jawi to the point that they think it should be made a subject that is offered at all educational levels.
Sejarah perkembangan tulisan Jawi sangat berkait rapat dengan penyebaran agama Islam daripada orang Parsi ke Kepulauan Melayu (Nik Hassan & Wan Zana, 2015). Tulisan Jawi dalam pembinaan tamadun Melayu, khususnya pada zaman kegemilangan Kerajaan Melayu Melaka telah digunakan dalam bidang persuratan sebagai cara untuk merakamkan segala khazanah ilmu pengetahuan dan kebijaksanaan masyarakat Melayu (Hashim Musa, 2005). Pada zaman Kerajaan Melayu Melaka juga, kemahiran menggunakan tulisan Jawi sebagai tulisan dalam bahasa Melayu merupakan salah satu identiti bagi bangsa Melayu beragama Islam (Nik Hassan & Wan Zana, 2015). Walau bagaimanapun, kajian Madihah Mohamad (2007) menunjukkan pelajar Melayu hari ini sudah tidak berminat membaca dan menulis menggunakan tulisan Jawi. Berdasarkan isu, kajian ini dijalankan untuk mengenalpasti persepsi pelajar Melayu di institusi pengajian tinggi (UNITEN) berkaitan kemahiran menggunakan tulisan Jawi sebagai salah satu lambang identiti bangsa Melayu, dan kepentingan tulisan Jawi sebagai lambang identiti bangsa Melayu beragama Islam. Kajian ini menggunakan borang soal selidik sebagai medium pengumpulan data, dan data yang dikumpul kemudiannya dianalisis menggunakan perisian SPSS. Hasil kajian mendapati, majoriti pelajar Melayu UNITEN yang terlibat dengan kajian ini bersetuju bahawa kemahiran menggunakan tulisan Jawi merupakan salah satu lambang identiti bagi bangsa Melayu di Malaysia. Hasil kajian juga menunjukkan sebilangan besar responden bersetuju kepentingan tulisan Jawi sebagai lambang identiti Melayu beragama Islam. Kata kunci: Tulisan Jawi, identiti Melayu, kemahiran Jawi.
This study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the use of the Malay language learning tool called PETAH to improve its communication skills. Learning aids are among the important elements to improve one's language skills, especially for second or foreign speakers. Past studies conducted by researchers like Fa'izah et.al (2010), Khuzaiton (2012) and others have proven that there are issues of communication among speakers of languages other than English in the non-Malays in Malaysia. Based on these issues, the main objective of this study is to analyze the effectiveness of the use of PETAH learning aids on improving the communication skills of students who use it. This study uses a quantitative research method that uses a questionnaire containing 25 items aimed at the effectiveness of the use of PETAH learning aids. This questionnaire instrument was used to get feedback from respondents after they used PETAH learning aids. Data from the questionnaires were analyzed using SPSS version 21. The results showed that the majority of respondents (mean values ranging from 3.35 to 4.71) agree that PETAH learning tools have improved their effectiveness in communication Malay language, especially if used continuously. In conclusion, a learning tool PETAH has a good impact on the improvement of communication skills of Malay language among non-Malays speakers in Malaysia.
