A variety of fructans occurs in plants, having various configuration and chain lengths from 3 up to a few hundred fructose units. The structurally simplest fructan is a linear inulin, where the fructose units are linked by β-2,1 bonds, present mostly in Asteraceae and Cichorioideae (e.g. dahlia). The pharmacological effects of fructans depend mainly on the degree of polymerization (DP). Hence, a controlled DP distribution profile is essential for the expected spectrum of pharmacological activities. The aim of this study was to purify fructans from dahlia (Dahlia x hortensis Guill. cv.'Ken's Flame') tubers with different inulin chain lengths profile. We developed the selective preparative approach, followed by qualitative and quantitative analyses by pulsed amperometry-high performance anion-exchange chromatography. The fructans were obtained by the extraction of dahlia tubers with water, concentrated under vacuum, subsequent precipitation of carbohydrate fraction by ethanol, followed by purification using four different combinations of absorbents such as Dowex ® ion-exchange resin, aluminium oxide, calcium carbonate, and activated carbon. The highest content of short-chain inulin (38%) was in the crude fraction and after the separation on Al 2 O 3 and CaCO 3 . All methods selectively enriched inulin in the middle-length chains. The highest concentration of high-quality longchain inulin (16%) was obtained by consecutive washing through CaCO 3 , Al 2 O 3 , Dowex, and charcoal. This complex was also the most balanced in terms of the proportion among short-, medium-, and long-chain inulin (33%, 43%, and 16%, respectively). ARTICLE HISTORY

Many plants consist of volatile substances, these substances possess a variety of pharmacological effects on the human body, the main ones are analgesic, anti-inflammatory, healing, antimicrobial, soothing, and so on. The aim was to study the qualitative composition and quantitative content of volatile substances of the herb of Dahlia Nymphaeales of Ken's Flame cultivar by chromatographymass spectrometry. For the study an Agilent Technology 6890 gas chromatograph with the mass spectrometric detector 5973 was used. As the result of the research 46 substances have been determined, among them 43 substances have been identified. It has been found that sesquiterpinoidsα-kadinol, globulol, vulgarol A, spathulenol, allo-spathulenol were dominant among all groups of compounds identified. The quantitative content of this group was 21.9% of the total amount of compounds. The content of both sesquiterpenoids and fatty acids was the same (17.7% each). Sesquiterpinoids were represented by 10 compounds: aromadendren, allo-aromadendren, β-Elemen, β-farnezen, germacrene D, germacrene B, shyobunon, farnezen, δ-kadinen, β-sesquiphellandrene. Shiobunon prevailed among sesquiterpinoids (210.81 mg/g). The fatty acids were represented by 4 compounds: palmitoleic acid, palmitic acid, oleic acid, linoleic acid, among them palmitoleic acid (200.46 mkg/g) prevailed. The content of triterpenoids (β-caryophyllene, α-caryophyllene, squalene) was 9.11%. In addition to these compounds the essential oil of Dahlia Nymphaeales herb contained alkanes (8.7%), sesquiterpene ketones (7.9%), diterpene alcohols (5%). Furthermore, the raw material accumulated a trace amount of alkenylphenols (1.6%), ketones (1.4%), sesquiterpene oxides, aldehydes and phenols (1.2% each), monoterpene alcohols (0.32%).
Flavonoids-a group of biologically active compounds, which affects most of the structural and functional systems of the human body. Aim. The purpose of our work is to study flavonoids in grass of some species of genus Dahlias plants. Materials and methods. The objects of research were grass of genus dahlias plants: "Gebu", "La Baron", "Colorado Classic". The qualitative composition was determined by a paper chromatography, the quantitative content by spectrophotometry in recount per rutine. Results and discussion. Kaempferol, hyperoside, apigenin, luteolin, quercetin and rutin were identified in such species as "La Baron" and "Colorado Classic". Hyperoside and luteolin were not found in "Gebu". The highest content of flavonoids was in "La Baron"-0.65 ± 0.02 %. Conclusions. The data obtained will be used in the development of drugs.
