Palavras-chave: forrageiras, melhoramento genético, pastagem, persistência Path Analysis for Seed Production in Red Clover (Trifolium pratense L.)ABSTRACT -Red clover is a temperate legume species that shows good dry matter yield potential and forage quality, being indicated to supplement livestock animals during the cool season in the Southern part of Brazil. The objective of this experiment was to study seed yield in red clover through the use of path analysis, aiming to generate basic information to be used on breeding program or in management strategies, which lead to an increase on seed yield, natural reseeding and thus to a greater pasture persistence. The following variables were analyzed: seed yield, number of stems per plant, number of seed head per plant, number of seed head per stem and weight of one thousand seeds. The number of seed head per plant was the variable with the greatest correlation with seed yield (r = .710), basically through its direct effect on seed yield. The other variables showed smaller correlation coefficients with seed yield (r values from .175 to .578) as well as presented negative or small direct effects on it. Therefore, the number of seed head per plant showed to be the main characteristic to be considered when an increase in the red clover seed yield is required.
-This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of the use of supplementation in pasture cultivated with Avena strigosa (black oats), Lolium multiflorum (ryegrass) and Vicia sativa L. (common vetch) on the composition and somatic cells count (SCC) of Jersey cow milk. Eight cows of the Jersey breed were separated by milk production, lactation period and live weight and were randomly blocked into two homogeneous groups (one with supplementation and other only on pasture), in a randomized complete design. Both groups were allowed to pasture for about 7 hours per day in a rotational grazing system in strips, with a one-day occupation period. The supplemented group was fed daily with 8 kg of supplement made of soy bean meal, soy shells, calcium limestone and mineral salt. The results showed significant differences between the two groups, because the percentage of total solids, protein and milk fat were higher in the supplemented cows. The lactose percentage was not influenced by the supplement intake. The somatic cell count, although there was a lower statistical difference for the group on pasture, showed small numerical oscillation between the groups and therefore should not be considered an effect of supplementation. The supplement supply to Jersey cows during lactation caused an increase in the total milk solid percentage, because it raised the fat and protein concentration.
Red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) is one of the most important temperate legume species, used to lessen the lack of forage during the critical fall-winter period in Rio Grande do Sul, RS, Brazil. However, its utilization has been restricted mainly because of its lack of persistence. This work evaluates the dry matter yield and persistence of red clover half-sib progenies in two physiographic regions of RS: "Depressão Central", in Eldorado do Sul and "Encosta Superior do Nordeste", in Veranópolis. Experiments were carried out for two growing seasons and results were compared to two red clover commercial checks, Qüiñequeli and Estanzuela 116. The region of Veranópolis was more adequate for red clover forage production, enabling better yield and persistence. The best check for both locations was cultivar Estanzuela 116. At Eldorado do Sul persistence was highly affected and some progenies were superior to the best check. At Veranópolis the best check was very productive, with good persistence. The best progenies at both locations were selected to be propagated and submitted to additional recurrent selection cycles.

A population of 513 hybrids of Leucaena leucocephala (4x) and L. diversifolia ssp. diversifolia (4x), that is being analyzed for several morphological and agronomical characteristics, aiming at selecting cold tolerant plants, was also analyzed for floral color. A model of additive dominant inheritance (pink color dominant over white color, or presence versus absence of pigment, and the number of dominant alleles present determining the intensity of the pink color) is proposed. The action of two independent locus sets is also suggested, one for the male (with two main structural genes) and another for the female floral organs (one main structural gene). It is suggested that an undetermined number of regulatory genes affect color expression.
