Arteriovenous malformation of head and neck is a rare vascular anomaly but when present, it is persistent and progressive in nature. It can also represent a lethal benign disease. 1 Arteriovenous malformation occurs due to the failure of complete involution of fetal capillary bed resulting in the development of abnormal connections between arteries and veins. 2 Associated important clinical signs are warmth, a palpable thrill and a bruit. Most of the case reports of vascular lesions in oral cavity have been presented in relation to tongue, lips and in palate. Asymptomatic lesions tend to get neglected by patients. Here, we present a case of multiple vascular malformations on tongue and lips in a 32 year old female patient which was diagnosed based upon her oral lesions. Multiple radiopaque phleboliths were observed in panoramic radiograph.
It is estimated that more than one million new oral cancer cases are being detected annually in the Indian subcontinent, of which 90% are oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Oral potentially malignant disorder (OPMD) are associated with increased rate of occurrence of OSCC of lips or oral cavity. Transformation of oral cancer from OPMD is common, especially in South Asian countries like India, where tobacco and arecanut consumption is prevalent. Early diagnosis and timely treatment of PMD’s may help to prevent its malignant transformation into oral cancer. The aim of the article is to highlight the risk factors, etiology, clinical presentation of PMD, thus helps in early detection and treatment, thereby reducing incidence of oral cancer.
As an oral diagnostician, many of our patients we come across are mostly the potentially malignant disorder cases. Either it might be leukoplakia, nicotina stomatitis, oral submucous fibrosis, tobacco pouch keratosis. In each of this cases where habits are the prime factor for occurrence of the lesions intraorally, the first line of treatment is cessation of the habits. But practically speaking, we don't spend much time about the cessation of the habits. As an oral diagnostician, it is our duty to motivate and educate the patient about the evil effects of the deleterious habits and need to follow up the patient and guide him to quit the habits. This article intends to highlight about one of the methods to stop the deleterious habit of smoking that is nicotine replacement therapy and therewith preventing the transformation of potentially malignant disorders into oral cancer.
Trigeminal neuralgia is the one of the most painful condition known to mankind, so much so that it has described as suicide illness. The diagnosis of Trigeminal neuralgia is clinically plausible due to its specific characteristics. Differentiating Classical form secondary Trigeminal neuralgia requires further evaluation with either a CT or MRI. A correct diagnosis is crucial, as patients can then follow a generally acknowledged treatment modality of either Medication or surgery. The aim of this article is to present a case of Trigeminal Neuralgia secondary to Cerebellopontine angle Epidermoid cyst in an elderly female patient. She had to be maintained with medicines alone as she was skeptical of undergoing brain surgery. This report also portrays that secondary trigeminal neuralgia can be managed long term with carbamazepine without major adverse effects.
