Piezoelectric ceramic–polymer composites with 0–3 connectivity were fabricated using lead zirconium titanate (PZT) powder dispersed in an ionomer (Zn ionomer) and its reference ethylene methacrylic acid copolymer (EMAA) polymer matrix. The PZT–Zn ionomer and PZT–EMAA composites were prepared by melt extrusion followed by hot pressing. The effects of poling conditions such as temperature, time and electric field on the piezoelectric properties of the composites were investigated. The experimentally observed piezoelectric charge coefficient and dielectric constant of the composites were compared with theoretical models. The results show that PZT–Zn ionomer composites have better piezoelectric properties compared to PZT–EMAA composites. The static and fatigue properties of the composites were investigated. The PZT–Zn ionomer composites were found to have excellent fatigue resistance even at strain levels of 4%. Due to the self-healing capabilities of the ionomer matrix, the loss of piezoelectric properties after high strain tensile cyclic loading could be partially recovered by thermal healing.

A high‐voltage coefficient has been found in lead‐free piezoelectric particulate composites based on epoxy with lead‐free (K0.50Na0.50)0.94Li0.06NbO3 (KNLN) piezoceramic particles with a natural cubic morphology. The KNLN powder used in the composites has been prepared using a new solid‐state double calcination processing route. These particles were subsequently used to create random and structured KNLN‐epoxy composites. Using dielectrophoresis, these natural cubical KNLN particles were structured into one‐dimensional chains inside the epoxy matrix. Composites produced with these powders showed piezoelectric properties about a factor of 2 higher than those of composites processed with conventionally calcined KNLN powders. The dielectrophoretically structured KNLN‐epoxy composites with optimized particle size and morphology showed excellent piezoelectric properties, which can replace lead containing piezoelectric composites for sensor and energy harvesting applications in future.

Structured lead zirconium titanate (PZT)-epoxy composites are prepared by dielectrophoresis. The piezoelectric and dielectric properties of the composites as a function of PZT volume fraction are investigated and compared with the corresponding unstructured composites. The effect of poling voltage on piezoelectric properties of the composites is studied for various volume fractions of PZT composites. The experimentally observed piezoelectric and dielectric properties have been compared with theoretical models. Dielectrophoretically structured composites exhibit higher piezoelectric voltage coefficients compared to 0-3 composites. Structured composites with 0.1 volume fraction of PZT have the highest piezoelectric voltage coefficient. The flexural strength and bending modulus of the structured and random composites were analyzed using three-point bending tests.

The poling behaviour of tetragonal lead zirconate titanate (PZT) piezoelectric ceramic particles in a weakly conductive ionomer polymer matrix is investigated using high energy synchrotron X-ray diffraction analysis. The poling efficiency, crystallographic texture and lattice strain of the PZT particles inside the polymer matrix are determined and compared with the values for corresponding bulk ceramics reported in literature. The volume fraction of c-axis oriented domains and the lattice strain of the PZT particles are calculated from the changes in the integral intensities of the {200} peaks and the shift in the position of the {111} peaks respectively. It is shown that for an applied macroscopic field of 15 kV.mm ¡1 , the PZT particles are effectively poled, leading to a maximum n(002) domain reorientation volume fraction, of around 0.70. It is also found that a significant tensile lattice strain, e{111}, of 0.6% occurs in the direction of the applied electric field, indicating the occurrence of residual stresses within the 2-4 mm size diameter particles. Although lower than that observed in poled tetragonal PZT ceramics, this level of lattice strain does indicate that the PZT particles within the composite experience significant elastic constraint. The correlation between the poling induced structural changes and the macroscopic piezoelectric and dielectric properties is discussed.
