Analysis of the state of poling of lead zirconate titanate (PZT) particles in a Zn-ionomer composite

Abstract: The poling behaviour of tetragonal lead zirconate titanate (PZT) piezoelectric ceramic particles in a weakly conductive ionomer polymer matrix is investigated using high energy synchrotron X-ray diffraction analysis. The poling efficiency, crystallographic texture and lattice strain of the PZT particles inside the polymer matrix are determined and compared with the values for corresponding bulk ceramics reported in literature. The volume fraction of c-axis oriented domains and the lattice strain of the PZT par… Show more

“…The original method of parallel plate contact poling was investigated for the poling of PZT composites. However; unlike PZT ceramics, the composites require much higher voltages for poling due to the difference in dielectric properties of the particles and the surrounding epoxy 51,53 . These high voltages can cause dielectric breakdown of the composite and create a short across the electrodes, especially when there are pinholes, bubbles, or other weak points 51,53 .…”
