The knowledge of the biological behavior and clinicopathologic features of jaw cysts constitute key aspects to provide early diagnosis and adequate surgery.
The hyper-IgE syndrome (HIES) is a rare disorder characterized by pruritic dermatitis, recurrent Staphylococcus skin abscesses and extremely elevated levels of IgE in serum. In this report, an elevenyear-old-boy with hyper-IgE syndrome is presented. He had a coarse facial appearance, pruritic dermatitis, recurrent skin abscesses, pulmonary infection, a reduced rate of resorption of the roots of primary teeth and an elevated serum IgE concentration. The colonization of Candida albicans, Kiebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus were found as; (1x102 CFU), (2.2x104 CFU), (2.2x104 CFU) and (2.6x103 CFU) per ml saliva, respectively. Also the pulp of a deciduous molar was investigated with light and transmission electron microscope (TEM). As conclusion, treatment for this condition is lifelong administration of therapeutic doses of a penicillinase-resistant penicillin, with the addition of other antibiotics or anti-fungal agents as required for specific infections.
Lymphangioma is a benign hamartomatous lesion caused by congenital malformation of the lymphatic system. This benign tumor is detected most commonly at birth or in
early childhood but rarely in adults. On clinical examination, most lymphangiomas contain clear lymph fluid, but some may present as transparent vesicles containing red
blood cells due to hemorrhage. In addition, lymphangioma may occur in association with hemangioma. This tumor occurs most commonly in the head and neck area, but
rarely in the oral cavity. The dorsum of the tongue is the most common location in the mouth, followed by the lips, buccal mucosa, soft palate, and floor of the mouth.
There are various treatment approaches for lymphangioma, but surgical excision is the preferred method. We present a case of a 26-year-old man with lymphangioma on the
anterior dorsal part of the tongue, not associated with any dysfunction in mastication or speech disorders.
