Ensuring extension of the vase life of Heliconia commercial stems is essential for the consumer acceptance process. For this, the objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of hydration on the vase life of two Heliconia cultivars. The experimental design was in randomized blocks with subdivided plots (cultivar x hydration) with 6 replicates, being cultivars x hydration: no hydration (control), water hydration and hydration + sugar. The results considering cultivars as a factor showed a statistically significant difference (P ≤ 0.05). According to the comparison of means (P ≤ 0.05), the Heliconia psittacorum x spathorcinata tropics showed the best response. Both hydration and interaction between cultivars, showed no significant differences (P ≤ 0.05). Hydration did not guarantee a greater number of days of durability, so it is a good alternative, the use of dry treatment and the reduction on the excessive water use, according to the results obtained in this study.
Inoculation effect of Azospirillum spp. over nutrimental content of moringa (Moringa oleifera Lam.)
Heliconias have great commercial importance due to their durability of inflorescences, sizes, forms and bright colors. Regarding its production, the mineral nutrition of the crop is one of the most relevant aspects to obtain quality floral stems. The objective was to determine the influence of N-P-K on the growth and nutritional content of Heliconia stricta Dwarf Jamaican. A completely randomized block design was used with four treatments and five repetitions. The treatments consisted in fertilizing the soil with N-P-K. The levels of fertilization expressed in kg ha-1 of NPK were: control without application 00-00-00 (T100), 31-31-31 (T231), 62-62-62 (T362) and 93-93-93 (T493). The plants received the treatments for six months. Growth variables and nutrient contents of heliconia biomass were evaluated. The analysis of variance showed significant statistical differences (P ≤ 0.05) in the vigor and color of the plant, as well as the phosphorus, magnesium and copper contents. The significant increases in vigor and color were with doses 31-31-31 and 62-62-62 of NPK. As for the contents of P, Mg and Cu were influenced by doses 31-31-31, 62-62-62 and 93-93-93 of NPK. This work shows important findings in relation to the nutritional diagnosis in the foliar content of nutrients.
<p><strong>Background.</strong> A strategy to improve the nutritional content of moringa during its different stages of growth is through efficient fertilizers management. <strong>Objective</strong>. To evaluate the effectiveness of cutting age and fertilization in the nutritional content of moringa (<em>Moringa oleifera</em> Lam.). <strong>Methodology.</strong> A complete randomized block design was used with split plot arrangement (A/B) and four repetitions. Factor A: cut age, 60 and 120 days after transplantation (DAT). Factor B: soil fertilization with NPK (kg ha-1) in the doses 13-13-13 (T113), 26-26-26 (T226), 38-38-38 (T338) and control treatment without application (T4SA). The variables evaluated were: crude protein (CP), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), sodium (Na), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn) and iron (Fe) in stems and leaves. Statistical differences were found (<em>p </em>≤ 0.05) for cutting age, fertilization with NPK and the interaction between both. <strong>Results.</strong> The interaction age of cut - fertilization with NPK, showed statistical differences (<em>p </em>≤ 0.05); for the K in leaves and Zn in stem. According to the means test with Tukey (<em>p</em> ≤ 0.05) regarding factor A, the best treatment was at 60 DDT and T113, T226 and T338 for fertilization with NPK. The best interaction was for the age of cut at 60 DDT with application of T226 and T338 for K in leaves and T113 and T338 for Zn in stem. <strong>Implications.</strong> The low doses of fertilization used in this study and the form of fertilizer distribution along the growth of moringa contribute to an efficient management of fertilizers in moringa. <strong>Conclusions.</strong> The age of cut at 60 DDT showed the highest values of nutritional content in leaves and stems. The fertilization doses applied significantly improved the nutritional values with respect to the control. The interaction between cutting age and fertilization with NPK promoted increases in nutritional values of K in leaves and Zn in Stems at the cut age of 60 DDT.</p>
<p><strong>Background: </strong>Heliconias are commercially important flowers due to its abundance of shapes, sizes, and colors. In Mexico, however, this ornamental crop is not considered in the statistical yearbook of agricultural production. In addition, there is no research regarding the context of tropical floriculture. <strong>Objective:</strong> To explore all scientific contributions related to the cultivation of heliconias. <strong>Methodology: </strong>A bibliographic search was conducted in Redalyc, SciELO, Scopus and Google Scholar with the key word “heliconia.” After cleansing the database of similar results, we generated a final compilation of 42 papers, which were then subject to an analysis of textual content by using Nvivo 12 Plus software to identify the contributions by means of the following categories of analysis: Production, post-harvesting, and commercialization. The species of heliconias were also identified. <strong>Results:</strong> The content analysis showed that 73.71% of all scientific contributions correspond to the production category, 12.5 % to post-harvesting, and 13.88% to commercialization. For each category, different topics which guide the contributions were identified. We found 43 species of heliconias that were used for research purposes in the three categories of analysis. <strong>Implications:</strong> The analysis was limited only to scientific contributions explored. An analysis that considered other sources of information could have strengthened this analytical exercise. <strong>Conclusion:</strong> The scientific contributions regarding the cultivation of heliconias are mainly oriented to the production category, which demonstrates that the focus is on the improvement of the production process. On the contrary, the contributions on post-harvesting and commercialization are incipient; therefore, it is important to address these topics in future research. </p>
