Climate change is one of the issues of greatest concern to today’s society. The increase in temperatures has affected sea levels, polar masses and extreme events, among others. There are many scientific studies that analyze the impacts of climate change on coastal communities, but most of them focus on beach erosion and coastal recession. Scientific literature on the effects of climate change on ports and harbors and their adaptation is much less abundant. Ports are essential for the economy and society of their cities, so studying the impact of climate change on them is an urgent need. The Mediterranean and the Spanish Mediterranean coast is one of the areas that will be most affected by climate change in the future. In addition, the Spanish economy depends a lot on its tourism and, thus, on its coastal cities. Therefore, the study of the impact of climate change on Spanish ports and coastal communities is essential. This article presents a review of the studies carried out until now on the effects of climate change on Spanish ports, and it identifies research gaps and weaknesses and suggests new research lines.

Wave energy is one of the most powerful sources of energy on our planet, but its exploitation is difficult. Much current research on renewable energy is focused on how to harness ocean energy. However, wave energy converter (WEC) technology is still immature and how to reach high levels of efficiency is still unknown. In coming years, this field is likely to reach a high level of development, so it is important to continue research on the improvement of the performance of these devices. One of the most important wave energy converters is the oscillating water column (OWC). The main difficulty of OWCs is that they have to provide good rates of hydrodynamic efficiency for many different types of sea states (different periods, heights, wavelengths, etc.). The other big concern is the optimization of the geometric parameters of the device. This research paper is focused on these two big concerns: how oceanographic parameters affect the hydrodynamic behavior of an OWC and its geometric optimization. Different studies about how wave and geometric characteristics affect the performance of an OWC are reviewed and relationships between these and the hydrodynamic performance of an OWC are finally outlined and summed up.

Climate change is an issue nowadays present in almost all of the media daily, but information can be manipulated very easily. It is a fact that, in the last decades, greenhouse gas emissions have multiplied, and to tackle climate change efficiently, it is necessary to analyze their origin and their relationship with regards to countries, population, production, etc. When analyzing a country’s emissions, not only the total emissions, but also the emissions in relation to its population, production, etc., should be considered. In this paper, a new parameter (CE2N) that merges total emissions, and emissions per capita and per GDP is proposed and applied, obtaining, for the first time, a unified and universal parameter that considers the emission efficiency and total emissions at the same time and can be used in all countries. We validated this new parameter with its implementation in previous environmental models, and the results obtained showed that CE2N would help to increase the transparency and objectivity of these models, giving more weight to emission efficiency, rather than other, more subjective criteria previously used. In addition, CE2N could be implemented in future international agreements, being beneficial not only for the scientific community, but also for policymakers.

Climate change has highlighted the need to promote renewable energies. The offshore wind industry is growing exponentially because of some political strategies supported by various organizations, such as the European Union. The implementation of these strategies is commonly associated with significant investments, public acceptance, or achieving better installations and greater cumulative capacities. To ensure that offshore renewable energy projects could reach their ambitious targets, this study promotes the implementation of political strategies or planning decisions using data mining techniques and analytical tools. Strategic decisions based on real data analysis could help to achieve more suitable and optimal infrastructures. The scour phenomenon jeopardizes the operability of offshore wind farms, making it necessary to study its evolution over the years. In this work, extensive research on the scour phenomenon in offshore wind farms using real data (from the Lynn and Inner Dowsing offshore wind farms located in the UK) was performed, which revealed an evident lack of consideration of this phenomenon for data-driven decision-making processes. As a novelty, this research develops a detailed geospatial analysis of data, studying the possible autocorrelation of scour data measured from each turbine between 2011 and 2015. The conclusions obtained could be used to improve future planning tasks in offshore wind farms.
