ABSTRACT. The reflection seismic method is extremely important for the hydrocarbon exploration. With more complex geological structures, as the pre-salt from Santos Basin, the reservoir exploration becomes more challenging and the multicomponent seismic investigation improves its mapping and characterization. To obtain multicomponent seismic data of an offshore survey it is necessary to use the OBN (Ocean Bottom Nodes) technology. The converted wave behavior, the large offsets and the difference of datum between source and receptors for layered media, results in strong nonhyperbolic travel-time events. Furthermore, the complexity and peculiarities of some unconventional reservoirs found in the pre-salt also increase the difficulty to perform the velocity analysis. For these reasons, it is necessary to use nonhyperbolic multiparametric travel-time approximations to control the nonhyperbolicity. Here we perform the comparison of nonhyperbolic travel-time approximations of seismic reflection events derived from geological models. The numerical study was considered as an inverse problem and it was treated according to an optimization criterion. The complexity analysis was performed in order to understand the behavior of each approximation concerning the unicity. After the computation of the relative errors between the observed curve and the calculated curve for each nonhyperbolic approximation, it was possible to find out the one with the highest accuracy for the events tested here.
The velocity analysis is an important step for the seismic processing. With the increase in the difficulty of work with specific conditions and complex geological structures, more complex travel-time approximations are developed to perform a better structural characterization. As the complexity increases, more approximations were developed aiming to characterize different factor responsible for the nonhyperbolicity, and using sometimes an additional parameter. Many nonhyperbolic multiparametric travel-time approximations were developed and their complexities vary strongly from one to other. In previous works, it was observed that some approximations present a unimodal behavior while other approximations showed a multimodal behavior. However, a specific kind of approximation showed both statistical distributions, the unimodal and the multimodal in distinct situations. To find out the factor responsible for this variation in the probabilistic distribution behavior of this kind of approximation, it was necessary to test different theoretical models to understand which variation in the structure interferes in the topography of the objective function.
To obtain a more accurate stratigraphic model, it is important to perform a reliable velocity analysis by fitting the calculated travel-time curve to the recorded one. The main challenge to perform this step in the offshore seismic survey is the fact there are many factors which present characteristics that generate nonhyperbolicity in travel-time events. For this reason, it is necessary to use an approximation which is able to control the effects of the nonhyperbolicity so that performing an efficient velocity analysis is possible.
ABSTRACT. Many nonhyperbolic multiparametric travel-time approximations were developed in the last decades. As the seismic inversion became more popular, there were studies concerning the objective function of this kind of equations. Many of these approximations have a unimodal behavior where there is only the global minimum region while others have a multimodal statistical distribution with the global minimum region and one or more local minimum regions. However, two approximations showed both unimodal and multimodal behaviors to vary depending on the model. As the variation of the model generates only subtle distortions concerning the topology of the objective function, a method which can make this topology more abrupt is a solution to perform a more effective inversion. This kind of information can be reached using the L1-norm rather than the L2-norm, and with the comparison of the two norms for both reflection events (PP and PS) of the model and both approximations, it is possible to understand which kind of improvement it brings concerning the complexity and accuracy analysis. Keywords: objective function, nonhyperbolicity, probability distribution.RESUMO.
