Essential Oils in Mexican Bays (Litsea spp., Lauraceae): Taxonomic Assortment and Ethnobotanical Implications. The seven species of Litsea found in Mexico, all of them popularly known as "laurel," were surveyed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry for their foliar essential oils composition and related ethnobotanical applications. Litsea glaucescens is in high demand as a condiment, and is sold in rural and urban markets all over Mexico. However, four other species are also locally used for food seasoning. Litsea guatemalensis is the species most used in traditional medicine, especially to treat fever, chills, infectious diseases of the digestive system, and arthritis. No reports of culinary, medicinal, or other applications were located for L. muelleri, and L. pringlei. This is the first report on the essential oils for L. neesiana, L. muelleri, L. parvifolia, L. pringlei, and L. schaffneri. The terpenoids commonly found in all the Litsea species studied were 1,8-cineole, linalool, α-pinene, β-pinene, mcymene, terpinen-4-ol, α-terpineol, caryophyllene, and caryophyllene oxide. Nevertheless, each species can be distinguished by its characteristic assortment of terpenoids. According to hierarchical cluster analysis, three groups of species were recognized: (1) 1,8-cineole group (C-10 terpenes), consisting of L. glaucescens, L. schaffnerii, L. pringlei, and L. muelleri; (2) limonene-rich group (C-10 oxygenated terpenes), including L. guatemalensis, and L. neesiana, and (3) oxygenated sesquiterpenes-rich group (C-15 oxygenated terpenes), comprising L. parvifolia. The chemical profiles of L. glaucescens and L. guatemalensis suggest a correlation with the culinary and medicinal uses of these species due to the known properties of their main constituents.
AbstractPlant communities that develop along the Usumacinta River are part of the regional wetlands. The goal of the study was to review and to synthesize the knowledge on the aquatic and riverine vegetation along the Usumacinta River basin. We used the National System of Information on Biodiversity of the National Commission for the Knowledge and Use of Biodiversity (SNIB-Conabio), reviewed 57 bibliographic sources, checked 5 regional herbaria and did field work during one year within the Usumacinta River itself and adjacent lagoon systems in the Coastal, Lagoon and Selva Lacandona Zones. We collected 1,995 plant samples that belong to 98 families and 472 species; 4.2% of the collected species were added as new records for the region. According to the Mexican Official Norm, we detected 85 species that are considered in some risk category. In total, 20,218 records were grouped in 212 families, 1,264 genera and 3,501 species, which demonstrates the great diversity of riverine and aquatic flora of the region. It is necessary to continue studying this type of wetlands, in order to understand their function that are the basis of management strategies to conserve the plant communities, the associated fauna and human populations that depend on these resources.
The genus Schizophyllum is easily recognized within the order Agaricales. However, at the species level, taxonomic information for identification purposes is limited. The objective of the present study was to confirm the identity of the Schizophyllum species present in Tabasco, Mexico, by means of a detailed taxonomic revision of the macro- and micromorphological characters in more than 90 specimens, as well as phylogenetic analyses inferred from ITS sequence data. In total, three Schizophyllum species are described, of which one constitute a new record for Mexico. Finally, the edibility of S. radiatum is reported for the first time in the humid tropical region.
