RESUMO-O cultivo do milho pipoca pode ser uma boa alternativa para pequenos produtores do Nordeste do Pará pela similaridade do cultivo em relação ao milho convencional e pelos preços alcançados pelo milho pipoca, superiores ao milho comum. O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar diferentes genótipos de milho pipoca quanto a caracteres agronômicos e capacidade de expansão (CE) dos grãos sob condições do Nordeste paraense. Foram realizados dois ensaios em blocos ao acaso para a avaliação de 29 híbridos e 25 populações experimentais. Em geral, os genótipos apresentaram bom desempenho quanto à produtividade de grãos, comparativamente às testemunhas. Em relação à qualidade de pipoca, a capacidade de expansão média dos híbridos foi inferior à das testemunhas. Em média, houve uma tendência de maior CE para as populações, comparativamente aos híbridos, e equivalência entre a média de CE das populações em relação à média das testemunhas. Individualmente, alguns genótipos se mostraram promissores e poderiam ser avaliados em um maior número de ambientes e anos agrícolas.
