Este artigo busca compreender o debate teórico que envolve o populismocomo conceito histórico-político, bem de sua manifestação na América Latina,tendo como hipótese que o populismo passou a ser encarado comoum fenômeno de viés negativo. Atualmente, o ressurgimento de práticaspopulistas tem aquecido o debate acadêmico que permeia o assunto, oque suscita a importância de se revisitar os conceitos e dilemas existentes.Por isso, objetivou-se analisar as definições de populismo e as diferentescorrentes intelectuais que o sondam, e compreender a contribuição dopensamento latino-americano para o tema. Utilizou-se da pesquisa bibliográficaqualitativa para abordar o assunto e concluiu-se que a hipótesenão pode ser corroborada, vez que a literatura não entende o populismocomo fenômeno de caráter essencialmente negativo. Assim, o populismo– longe de gerar consensos – corresponderia a uma forma política maleável,cujas nuances se fortaleceriam a depender do local e tempo estudado.
