Alors que la mesure joue un rôle indéniable pour le scientifique, que ce soit dans l'établissement d'un diagnostic ou dans la détermination de lois, de règles générales, Cotteret (2003) constate qu'aujourd'hui, en France, et jusqu'au niveau universitaire, il n'y a pas d'enseignement spécifique sur la mesure, c'est-à-dire d'enseignement de métrologie. Cette absence d'enseignement dédié uniquement à la mesure ne signifie pas pour autant que la mesure n'est pas prise en compte dans la scolarité.Ainsi, en France, les instructions officielles de 2007 pour l'école élémentaire soulignent, dans le domaine intitulé « éducation scientifique » regroupant les mathé-matiques et les sciences expérimentales, la nécessité de s'appuyer sur tous les champs de l'éducation scientifique pour permettre aux élèves de donner du sens aux grandeurs et à leur mesure. Dans le cadre de cette éducation scientifique, les élèves sont confrontés aux longueurs, masses, aires, volumes (capacités, contenances), angles, durées, températures. Une première approche de la notion d'incertitude est suggérée dès le cycle 3 (grades 3 à 5) : « une réflexion sur la précision des mesures sera menée à l'occasion de chaque activité » (MEN, 2002, p. 35).Cette notion d'incertitude est consolidée dans l'enseignement secondaire français puisqu'à l'issue de la scolarité obligatoire les élèves doivent être capables d'effectuer des mesures à l'aide d'instruments, d'exprimer et exploiter les résultats d'une mesure en prenant en compte les incertitudes liées au mesurage (socle commun de connaissances : France, 2006). Pour cela, ils doivent maîtriser les principales unités de mesure et savoir les associer aux grandeurs correspondantes, comprendre qu'à une mesure est associée une incertitude et appréhender la nature et la validité d'un résultat statistique. En fin de scolarité obligatoire, les élèves doivent donc maîtriser des compétences élaborées, à la fois sur les activités de mesurage et sur le traitement et le sens de la mesure.
