Le numéro 14.2 de Éducation & Didactique témoigne des équilibres entre approches dites théoriques et approches dites empiriques que la revue cherche à maintenir, au fil des parutions.Les articles de F. Boch, S. Prevel et J. Renaud rendent compte d'études à échelle fine d'interactions didactiques et d'enjeux de savoir très précis. Françoise Boch analyse le développement d'un test cherchant à évaluer la compétence lexicale d'un public d'adultes francophones. Cette visée très concrète vient buter sur la difficulté à modéliser théoriquement un objet de savoir pourtant si « évident ». Sandrine Prevel s'intéresse à la place qu'occupe le langage en didactique des sports collectifs, avec de très jeunes élèves, dans une approche très « concrète » qui fera justement écho à celles très « abstraite » de Engeström dans le même numéro. Juliette Renaud, elle, rend compte de la nécessité de formaliser les retours d'expérience des enseignants qui jouent leur part dans la conception continuée dans l'usage d'un outil didactique pour l'enseignement de la lecture des textes documentaires numériques au cycle 3.Les trois autres contributions sont à une échelle beaucoup plus large, comme des cartographies d'ensemble qui permettront de se situer dans un paysage plus vaste. Elles se présentent comme des états de l'art et des historiques qui sont amenés à devenir des références. Patrick Rayou fait une synthèse des approches en termes de rapport au savoir développées au sein de l'équipe ESCOL et présente une typologie socio-didactique des registres de l'apprentissage caractérisés par leur manière de prendre en compte une logique, un milieu culturel, un mode d'engagement des sujets propres à l'école contemporaine. L'intérêt du parcours théorique restitué par P. Rayou est qu'il révèle l'intérêt d'une intersection entre didactique, sociologie, pédagogie et psychologie. Le lecteur constatera que c'est à la même conclusion qu'aboutit Miguel Souto-Lopez, qui dresse une historique des relations entre sociologie et didactique(s), à partir des années 70. Il montre que ces domaines (sociologie anglaise du curriculum, sociologie française de la reproduction, théories didactiques), initialement distants voire hostiles se rapprochent non seulement par des échanges continus de concepts, mais plus récemment par des chantiers communs, autour de problèmes-frontières comme transposition didactique, rapport au langage/ rapport au savoir, malentendu socio-cognitif, ou encore contrat. Là encore, l'auteur conclut par la nécessité d'associer à ce vaste mouvement de convergence le champ de la psychologie, ce que confirme le dernier texte du dossier, où Yrio Engeström développe sa réflexion sur la paradoxale « élévation de l'abstrait au concret » qui décrit, selon lui, la construction de concepts en situation « naturelle » (in the wild).
