Plasmonics is a research area merging the fields of optics and nanoelectronics by confining light with relatively large free-space wavelength to the nanometer scale -thereby enabling a family of novel devices. Current plasmonic devices at telecommunication and optical frequencies face significant challenges due to losses encountered in the constituent plasmonic materials. These large losses seriously limit the practicality of these metals for many novel applications. This paper provides an overview of alternative plasmonic materials along with motivation for each material choice and important aspects of fabrication. A comparative study of various materials including metals, metal alloys and heavily doped semiconductors is presented. The performance of each material is evaluated based on quality factors defined for each class of plasmonic devices. Most importantly, this paper outlines an approach for realizing optimal plasmonic material properties for specific frequencies and applications, thereby providing a reference for those searching for better plasmonic materials.

The precise manipulation of a propagating wave using phase control is a fundamental building block of optical systems. The wavefront of a light beam propagating across an interface can be modified arbitrarily by introducing abrupt phase changes. We experimentally demonstrated unparalleled wavefront control in a broadband optical wavelength range from 1.0 to 1.9 micrometers. This is accomplished by using an extremely thin plasmonic layer (~λ/50) consisting of an optical nanoantenna array that provides subwavelength phase manipulation on light propagating across the interface. Anomalous light-bending phenomena, including negative angles of refraction and reflection, are observed in the operational wavelength range.

High-index dielectric and semiconductor nanoparticles supporting strong electric and magnetic resonances have drawn significant attention in recent years. However, until now, there have been no experimental reports of lasing action from such nanostructures. Here, we demonstrate directional lasing, with a low threshold and high quality factor, in active dielectric nanoantenna arrays achieved through a leaky resonance excited in coupled gallium arsenide (GaAs) nanopillars. The leaky resonance is formed by partially breaking a bound state in the continuum generated by the collective, vertical electric dipole resonances excited in the nanopillars for subdiffractive arrays. We control the directionality of the emitted light while maintaining a high quality factor (Q = 2,750). The lasing directivity and wavelength can be tuned via the nanoantenna array geometry and by modifying the gain spectrum of GaAs with temperature. The obtained results provide guidelines for achieving surface-emitting laser devices based on active dielectric nanoantennas that are compact and highly transparent.

Metamaterial Huygens' surfaces manipulate electromagnetic wavefronts without reflection. A broadband Huygens' surface that efficiently refracts normally incident light at the telecommunication wavelength of 1.5 μm is reported. The electric and magnetic responses of the surface are independently controlled by cascading three patterned, metallic sheets with a subwavelength overall thickness of 430 nm. The peak efficiency of the device is significantly enhanced by reducing the polarization and reflection losses that are inherent to earlier single-layer designs.

Dynamic switching of a plasmonic resonance may find numerous applications in subwavelength optoelectronics, spectroscopy, and sensing. Graphene shows a highly tunable carrier concentration under electrostatic gating, and this could provide an effective route to achieving electrical control of the plasmonic resonance. In this Letter, we demonstrate electrical control of a plasmonic resonance at infrared frequencies using large-area graphene. Plasmonic structures fabricated on graphene enhance the interaction of the incident optical field with the graphene sheet, and the impact of graphene is much stronger at mid-infrared wavelengths. Full-wave simulations, where graphene is modeled as a 1 nm thick effective medium, show excellent agreement with experimental results.

Pauli blocking of interband transistions gives rise to tunable optical properties in single layer graphene (SLG). This effect is exploited in a graphene-nanoantenna hybrid device where Fano resonant plasmonic nanostructures are fabricated on top of a graphene sheet. The use of Fano resonant elements enhances the interaction of incident radiation with the graphene sheet and enables efficient electrical modulation of the plasmonic resonance. The ability to dynamically modulate the plasmon resonance offers several advantages such as the ability to adjust the spectral window of the operation, multiarray biosensing 8 and improving the sensitivity of detection by improving signal-tonoise ratio. 28,29 and has been proposed as a platform for optical devices. 30,31 We recently demonstrated electrically controlled damping of the plasmon resonance in metal bowtie antennas placed on top of a graphene layer at the mid-IR wavelengths. 32 Subsequently, there were a number of devices that demonstrate the tuning of plasmonic antennas 33−36 and photonic crystal cavities 37,38 using graphene. However, strong electrical tunability of plasmonic resonances using graphene has so far been experimentally demonstrated only at the mid-IR wavelegnths. Tunable devices at the technologically important visible and/or near-IR wavelengths (for example, for various biosensing applications and telecommunications) have not been realized so far. In this Letter, we show that graphene can be used to effectively modulate the Fano resonance in metal nanostructures. The achieved tunability is much stronger than in our previous work 32 and the wavelength of operation is closer to the near-IR wavelength range where many potential applications exist.The Fano resonance results from the interference of a narrow resonance with a broad continuum of states leading to enhanced transmission and reduced reflection, identifiable by the characteristic Fano line shape. 39 Fano resonance using metal nanostructures has been reported in dolmen, 40 nonconcentric ring/disk cavities and oligomer 41 geometries, and has been widely investigated because of its large sensitivity to the local environment. 39 In our experiments, we first fabricated a graphene field effect transistor (FET) by transfer of CVD

Graphene has recently emerged as a viable platform for integrated optoelectronic and hybrid photonic devices because of its unique properties. The optical properties of graphene can be dynamically controlled by electrical voltage and have been used to modulate the plasmons in noble metal nanostructures. Graphene has also been shown to support highly confined intrinsic plasmons, with properties that can be tuned in the wavelength range of 2 µm to 100 µm. Here we review the recent development in graphene-plasmonic devices and identify some of the key challenges for practical applications of such hybrid devices.

The dielectric nanophotonics research community is currently exploring transparent material platforms (e.g., TiO2, Si3N4, and GaP) to realize compact high efficiency optical devices at visible wavelengths. Efficient visible-light operation is key to integrating atomic quantum systems for future quantum computing. Gallium nitride (GaN), a III-V semiconductor which is highly transparent at visible wavelengths, is a promising material choice for active, nonlinear, and quantum nanophotonic applications. Here, we present the design and experimental realization of high efficiency beam deflecting and polarization beam splitting metasurfaces consisting of GaN nanostructures etched on the GaN epitaxial substrate itself. We demonstrate a polarization insensitive beam deflecting metasurface with 64% and 90% absolute and relative efficiencies. Further, a polarization beam splitter with an extinction ratio of 8.6/1 (6.2/1) and a transmission of 73% (67%) for p-polarization (s-polarization) is implemented to demonstrate the broad functionality that can be realized on this platform. The metasurfaces in our work exhibit a broadband response in the blue wavelength range of 430–470 nm. This nanophotonic platform of GaN shows the way to off- and on-chip nonlinear and quantum photonic devices working efficiently at blue emission wavelengths common to many atomic quantum emitters such as Ca+ and Sr+ ions.
