A technique for measurement of CO2 and ethylene production by melon (Cucumis melo L. cv. Ogen) while still attached to the plant is described. Metal cans of different dimensions are used, the lid being put on the pedicel while the fruit is very young. Once a week throughout the growing period the melon was hermetically enclosed in the cans and a sample of accumulated atmosphere was withdrawn with a syringe and used for determination of CO2 and ethylene production.
