Resumo: Os primeiros conceitos de esquizofrenia contemplavam definições inespecíficas sobre o transtorno esquizofrênico. Somente em 1980 Crow propôs a classificação mais conhecida para o transtorno: a dicotomização em subtipos I e II ou positivo/negativo, sendo os sintomas da síndrome positiva alucinações e delírios e da síndrome negativa, o embotamento afetivo e a pobreza do discurso. Embora a farmacoterapia tenha apresentado avanços no tratamento da doença, indica-se a psicoterapia para reverter os prejuízos sociais e interpessoais que ela acarreta. O objetivo deste estudo é relatar uma intervenção comportamental, em um Centro de Atenção Psicossocial, em paciente de 19 anos com emprego de Treinamento de Habilidades Sociais (THS) como uma possibilidade para o tratamento da esquizofrenia. Tal procedimento contribuiu para diminuir para a jovem o estereótipo da doença, visto que ampliou o seu repertório social e possibilitou avanços nas esferas psicológicas, sociais e vocacionais.Palavras chave: Esquizofrenia. Treinamento de habilidades sociais.O Centro de Atenção Psicossocial -CAPS -constitui-se em um serviço regionalizado, de atenção secundária à saúde mental, resultado do Movimento da Reforma Psiquiátrica e da promulgação da Lei Nº 10.216/01 (Brasil, 2004), que regulamenta as internações psiquiátricas e redireciona o modelo assistencial em saúde mental. O CAPS infantil é um serviço ambulatorial de atenção diária destinado a crianças e adolescentes com transtornos mentais.Segundo a Portaria Nº 336/02/2002(Brasil, 2002, ficou estabelecido o atendimento individual (medicamentoso, psicoterápico, de orientação, entre outros) como uma das atividades assistenciais prestadas aos usuários deste serviço. Silva (2006) aponta que o histórico conceitual da esquizofrenia e a descrição da demência precoce por Emil Kraepelin datam do fim do sécu-lo XIX, quando este estabeleceu uma classificação de transtornos mentais que se baseava no modelo médico. O termo "demência precoce" era usado pelo fato de a doença começar no início da vida e quase invariavelmente levar a sintomas de alucinação, perturbações em atenção, compreensão e fluxo de pensamento, esvaziamento afetivo e sintomas catatônicos.Em 1911, Bleuler (citado por Ey, Bernard, & Brisset, 1985) criou o termo "esquizofrenia" , que substitui "demência precoce" na literatura, e foi conceitualizado para indicar a presença de um cisma entre pensamento, emoção e comportamento nos pacientes afetados. Uma distinção importante traçada por Bleuler entre seu conceito de esquizofrenia e o conceito de demência precoce de Kraepelin, segundo Grebb, Kaplan e Sadock (1997), era a ocorrência de um curso deteriorante na demência precoce, o que não ocorria na esquizofrenia.Avanços e pesquisas sobre a doença tornaram possível o surgimento de classificações mais precisas de subtipos esquizofrênicos.
