Nature is nurture. Since time immemorial, Folk medicines have been the traditional beliefs of our ancestors to protect their health with the help of herbal and other remedies; like Ayurveda, folk medicines serve both preventive and curative purposes. One such medicine is Grahanibeelu
Polyherbal formulations (PHFs) are potential for their safety, cost effectiveness and better acceptability than allopathic drugs. PHFs help in amelioration of various serious disorders. Therapeutic efficacy of herbal medicine is exerted due to the bioactive constituents of plants. The present study was aimed to prepare and standardize a polyherbal formulation (Vachadi syrup) including traditional drugs such as Acorus calamus (rhizomes), Trachyspermum ammi (fruits), Phyllanthus emblica (fruits), Terminalia bellirica (fruits), Terminalia chebula (fruits), Zingiber officinalis (rhizomes). Methods: Prepared polyherbal formulation was subjected to determine the physical constants (pH determination, refractive index, specific gravity, total solids, reducing and non reducing sugar) and HPTLC fingerprinting. Results: The analysis revealed the physical constant such as refractive index 1.43418, specific gravity 1.256, pH 3.5, total solids 61.50, total sugar 17.64 and reducing sugar 4.46. HPTLC fingerprinting profile showed different band patterns at different wavelength under short UV, long UV and at 620nm after derivatisation with vanillin sulphuric acid spraying reagent. Unique Rf patterns were recorded. Conclusion: Vachadi syrup was authenticated according to pharmacopeial standards as its analysis was important to ensure the quality of drug.
Objective: To study the concepts regarding Medha, Medhya and IQ. Detailed assessment of IQ level of school going children with 6-8 years of age group. To study the efficacy of Shankhapushpi Choorna in the enhancement of IQ of school going children with Borderline IQ. Design: Open randomized placebo controlled clinical study with pre and post-test design. Setting: O.P.D. of Sri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara College of Ayurveda and Hospital, Udupi and also nearby schools of Udupi. Interventions: A minimum of 40 children under borderline IQ were selected based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The selected children were randomly divided into 2 groups of 20 each. Group A (Trial Group) were treated with Shankhapushpi Choorna with dose of 5grams daily at night, after food with lukewarm milk for a duration of 60 days and Group B was administered with Placebo. The follow up period was 30 days after the intervention. Main outcome measures: The subjective criteria were based on the parameters of Grasping power, Memory power, Courage & Activity. The values obtained using Malin’s Intelligence Scale for Indian Children (MISIC) were considered for objective assessment. Results: Over the duration of the study, the trial drug Shankhapushpi Choorna was seen to have a positive effect on all the subjective and objective parameters with statistically highly significant results. Conclusion: Shankhapushpi Choorna with the proper dosage according to the age definitely improves the Medha of children with borderline IQ. The drug can be used as both promotive as well as curative aspects in accordance with intelligence.
Pratishyaya is one among the Nasagata roga & is a complex disease involving several symptomatology and diverse pathogenesis. It is one of the common disorders of children known for its recurrence and chronicity. It could lead to complications such as Kasa, Shwasa then Kshaya if not managed in time. Recurrence of this disease can be attributed to lower level of immunity in children due to Asampurna bala and hence we need such a drug to improve the immunity to prevent recurrence and complications. Vachadi syrup is one such medi cine which serves the purpose, with this aim this trial has been taken up. It is an open labeled clinical trial where 30 children of age group 4-12 yrs with the signs and symptoms of Pratishyaya were enrolled. Vachadi syrup was given in a dose of 5ml 8 th hourly for 4-8yrs and 10ml 8 th hourly for 8-12yrs for 7 days, clinical assessment was done by grading both subjective and objective criteria. Vachadi Syrup shows highly significant results in clinical symptoms of Pratishyaya & laboratory investigations. Pratishyaya is the disease condition in which Vata and Kapha vitiation is observed, Vachadi sryup shows the dominancy of Tikta, Kashaya and Katu Rasa, Ushna Virya(hot potency), Katu Vipaka (post digestion) which helps in alleviating Vata & Kapha by breaking down the pathogenesis. The clinical trial suggested that the Vachadi syrup is effective and safe herbal formulation in reducing the signs and symptoms of Pratishyaya.
Osgood Schlatter disease (OSD) is an inflammatory injury of the growth plate on the tibia just below the level of the knee at the tibial tubercle. The tibial tubercle is the bony attachment of the quadriceps (front thigh muscle). Contraction of the quadriceps results primarily in straightening of the leg at the level of the knee. A growth plate is an area of developing tissue near the ends of long bones or areas of muscle attachment. The growth plate in children allows the bones to expand in length thus allowing a child to reach his/her full height by the age of 16-19years. Compared to the surrounding bones and muscles, the growth plate serves as a weak point. Thus, repetitive pulling on a growth plate, especially from a larger powerful muscle like the quadriceps, can result in injury to the growth plate and subsequent pain. Pain is usually worse during or just after activity, and tends to improve with rest. It is commonly seen in growing, active adolescents between the ages of 11 and 15 years. In this article, a case of 14 years old boy diagnosed as Osgood Schlatter treated with Panchakarma and oral medicines. Encouraging results were observed in the form of reduction in pain and range of movements.
