Summary Sheep and goats were experimentally infected with pooled whole blood from related imported Jersey cows with persistent lymphocytosis. Five of 7 sheep and 1 of 5 goats developed lymphocytosis (leukaemia) 12, 16, 25, 24, 41 and 25 months post‐infection respectively. Three sheep were killed or died at months 24, 23 and 25 because of malignant lymphoma of the lymphoblastic type. The 1 leukaemic goat and 2 leukaemic sheep were still in a clinically good condition 4 years after onset of experiment. Persistent fluorescing, complement fixing and precipitating antibodies could already be detected at months 1–3 in all 7 sheep and 5 goats. Four goats, however, became negative in the complement fixation test at month 32. For the early diagnosis of bovine leukaemia the indirect fluorescent antibody technique, the micro complement fixation and gel diffusion tests are the methods of choice.
Summary The fluorescent antibody technique and the immunodiffusion test were used for the serological detection of type C virus found in one bovine and two sheep established cell lines. The electron microscopic demonstration of type C virus particles supported by uridine labelling suggested that a virus specific antigen underlay the FA reaction and the reaction of identity in the IDT. Preliminary FA tests employing various antisera against mammalian oncornaviruses may indicate that bovine leukemia virus represents antigenically a unique group.
