Brominated dioxins and dibenzofurans (PBDDs and PBDFs) are known contaminants in commercial fire retardant preparations. Further, they are formed in incineration processes involving polybrominated biphenyl and diphenylether fire retardants. This report presents the characterization of polybrominated dioxins and dibenzofurans. In particular, environmental monitoring methodology for PBDDs and PBDFs has been developed, and confirmation criteria for G U M S analyses are presented.
Certain thermoplastic resins, brominated diphenyl ether flame retardants, a pyrolysate and fumes collected during resin extrusion were analyzed for brominated dibenzofurans (PBDF) to assess the potential for encountering PBDF in the environment. EPA methods (RCRA Method 8280 and CERCLA IFB WAS4-AO02) were modified as needed to allow determination of PBDF in these matrices. Except for the base resins, all samples were found to contain PBDF. The pyrolysate also contained compounds whose structures were assigned to be brominated dioxins (PBDD) and possibly brominated xanthenes (PBX) or methyl-PBDF.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
