The effects of penicillin, streptomycin, chloramphenicol, and oxytetracycline were studied on the motility of the isolated fresh rabbit’s jejunum. No effect was observed with penicillin while streptomycin, chloramphenicol, and oxytetracycline induced consistently a depression or complete relaxation, and their dose-effect curve all showed a hyperbolic pattern. Byuse of blocking agents it was found that these antibiotics act on a nonspecific receptor independent of the autonomous neuromuscular junctions.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
