picture changes and ladders can be seen, indicating apoptosis. Apoptotic phenomena are not yet clearly evident at 6 hours after treatment, but they reach their maximum at 24 hours after treatment and can still be found at 48 hours. This indicates hypertonic induction in retinal cells of both necrotic activity and damage the cells try to repair and which, if repair mechanisms are not efficient, induce the cells to a "suicide" to protect the retina. The nuclear chromatin commences at 24 hours after treatment, at least in some neurons, to give pictures of pyknotic condensation, a clear sign of a reorganization of the chromatin itself. ConclusionsIn conclusion, our data show that, after hypertension, there is cell damage and that damage can be imputed to two different degenerative events. Those delayed events connected with apoptotic phenomena might well be susceptible to pharma-cological treatment (neuroprotection) with a view to preventing further neuronal damage. References
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
