Neuroinflammation impacts the brain and cognitive behavior through microglial activation. In this study, we determined the temporal sequence from microglial activation to synaptic dysfunction and cognitive behavior induced by neuroinflammation in mice. We found that LPS injection activated microglia within a short period, followed by impairments in GABAergic synapses, and that these events led to long-term cognitive impairment. We demonstrated that, 3 days after LPS injection, microglia in the hippocampus were significantly activated due to the LPS-induced inflammation in association with alterations in cellular morphology, microglial density, and expression of phagocytic markers. GABAergic synaptic impairments were detected at 4–6 days after LPS treatment, a time when microglia activity had returned to normal. Consequently, memory impairment persisted for 6 days after injection of LPS. Our results suggest that neuroinflammation induces microglia activation, GABAergic synaptic deficits and prolonged memory impairment over a defined temporal sequence. Our observations provide insight into the temporal sequence of neuroinflammation-associated brain pathologies. Moreover, the specific loss of inhibitory synapses accompanying the impaired inhibitory synaptic transmission provides mechanistic insight that may explain the prolonged cognitive deficit observed in patients with neuroinflammation. Thus, this study provides essential clues regarding early intervention strategies against brain pathologies accompanying neuroinflammation.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effect of major satisfaction in the relationship between academic self-efficacy and academic achievement among nursing students. Methods: Data were collected from 142 nursing students from March 5 to March 9, 2018, and the collected data were analyzed using SPSS version 21.0 for Windows. Results: Academic self-efficacy had a significant effect on both major satisfaction (β=.31, p<.001), and academic achievement (β=.43, p<.001). The parameter of major satisfaction was found to have a significant effect on the dependent variable, academic achievement (β=.22, p=.007), and the independent variable, academic self-efficacy, also had a significant effect on academic achievement (β=.39, p<.001). Thus, major satisfaction was found to have a partial mediating effect on the relationship between academic self efficacy and academic achievement. The Sobel test showed that the path of the academic achievement and academic self efficacy variables was significantly mediated by major satisfaction (Z=2.99, p=.003). Conclusion: Academic self-efficacy was found to affect academic achievement, and major satisfaction was found to play a partial mediating role in the relationship between academic self efficacy and academic achievement. Purpose: This study was conducted to develop an evaluation framework for QI activity in medical institutions and to analyze QI activity cases by applying the developed evaluation framework. Method: A four-phase process was employed to develop the evaluation framework, and a descriptive survey was used for the QI case study. Data were collected in April, 2010 by examining 157 QI activity cases presented at conferences and published in Journal of Korean Society of Quality Assurance in Health Care over the past three years. Developed QI activity evaluation instruments were used for data collection. Data were analyzed using the SPSS 18.0 for Windows program. Result: A QI Activity Evaluation Framework was developed. This framework consisted of 45 items. The department with the highest level of QI participation was the nursing department. The most frequent QI activity theme was patient safety. QI activity levels in Korean medical institutions are relatively equalized without significant differences according to institution characteristics. Conclusions: From the quality aspect of QI activity, more systematic and scientific approaches are required to upgrade QI activity. This study could provide methodological guidelines for QI activity and be useful in setting goals and directions for QI activity in medical institutions in Korea.
